Youth League Coaching Line-up For 2019
Youth League Women: Renae Garlepp
Youth League Men: Matt Johnston
Renae will begin her first Head Coaching position at NSBA after several years representing the club at a high level in a playing capacity. The former Opal and 2x WNBL champion was also a member of our Waratah championship winning side for 2018 and was named in the league’s All-Star 5 team.
On top of her elite playing career, Renae is no stranger to coaching. Renae has occupied the position of Coaching Director at the high school SCECGS Redlands in Neutral Bay for the last 4 years, and has been a part of both the country and metropolitan BNSW junior programs over several year as well. Most recently, Renae held the position of assistant coach for the under 18 NSW metropolitan team earlier this year.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to coach Youth League Women in 2019. I’m keen to build on the success of the 2018 campaign and help our juniors transition into competitive senior basketball
Matt’s experience began as a younger coach at the Gosford City Rebels where he coached numerous representative sides to State Championships, as well as Under 14 Australian Club National Championships, and was a part of the NSW Country State program.
Matt was appointed as a Development Coach for the Townsville McDonald’s Crocodiles in 2011, and held this role until 2014. Meanwhile, he was head coach of the Under 16 North Queensland men’s side for 3 years and occupied the role of Regional Services Manager and Coaching Director at Townsville Basketball Incorporated for 2013 and 2014 with glowing reviews
Returning to NSW to study teaching in 2015, Matt once again joined the NSW Country State team program coaching within the Under 18 men program. He held the position of head coach at the 2016 and 2017 championships.
“Being appointed as the Norths Bears Youth League coach is an exciting challenge, putting myself into a new environment with a new group of boys that are becoming men. I’m hopeful that I can help those involved on and off the court, as they begin to find independence as adults.”
