Under 17 by Cam Horsey (Coach)
What a difference a week can make to a side.
Staring down the barrel having to face Croydon for the opportunity to face off against Sth Belgrave in the big dance the boys turned up to the ground focused and ready to give their all for the Mitcham footy club. The boys knew this game could be their last in their junior footy career and they were prepared to give it all.
In the rooms before the game the boys were calm with a bit of light chatter amongst a few. They were getting taped up and having their massage with the coaches discussing a few tactics with select group’s. You could tell they were ready. With a bit of a chat from the coach and our rev up, we took to the ground with just one purpose, Beat Croydon and stay alive in the finals for another week.
The game started with a bang and our mids pushed hard to get that all important first score. The opportunity came pretty quickly and our centre work gave our forwards the chance to impact the scoreboard.
The first was a missed opportunity but you could see the intent from the boys.
As the quarter went on the boys were lifting all over the ground and the defence led beautifully by Stinger were right on top of the bigger Croydon boys. Our spread and run was back and we were able to put the opposition into chase mode. We ended the first with the lead, but that was only the beginning.
At the first change the boys were asked to maintain their intensity at the contest and they didn’t let me down. The game was ferocious leading up to the main break but we maintained the lead as well as the belief that we could win.
The third started as expected, with Croydon throwing everything they had at the contest but with Danny and Jimmy Nichol getting on top of their opponents, Stinger, maxxy Ads, Alex and Gilesy working beautifully down back, Timmy, Horse and Pows working well through the middle and Cam P giving us a huge presence up forward we maintained our hold on the game leading into the last. The feeling amongst the group was to bring it on, throw your best at us and we will beat you, and that’s what happened in the last. We totally dominated the final quarter kicking 5 unanswered goals giving us the chance at another shot at the flag. I couldn’t be more proud with the way we took the game on.
Let’s look forward to the week on the track and prepare to launch an attack on Sth Belgrave and get redemption for our loss in the first final. I believe in this amazing group of young men to take us to the ultimate prize.
Bring on The Granny, we will be ready.
Go Tiges!!!!!!
