SUNDAY, JULY 31 FINALS RESULTS

Under 11 (Coach: Sandy Marini)

Today saw the boys take on Nth Ringwood at Knox Gardens Reserve for a spot in the Granny.  On a wet and muddy deck we had our head in the game for most of the day barring some discipline issues with our defensive set up.  We had more than our share of the ball and many scoring opportunities, but fell short, eventually going down by 7 points.  Tears fell, which was heartbreaking for me but pleasing at the same time, as I know these boys give everything they've got and some.  Bring on Coldstream next week!

Special wishes go out to Alexi who broke his arm in yesterdays game.  We wish our brave team mate a speedy recovery!

Final Score:  Nth Ringwood 3.4.22 d Mitcham 2.3.15

Mitcham v Coldstream

Under 15 Girls (Coach: Luke Smith)

The Girls were shining and the sun looked tanned as we ventured out to the only suburb that I know of named after a bathroom fitting, “The Basin”, apparently named by famous local plumber Bobby  “Taps” Batterham, a great decision considering the second most famous person to come out of The Basin was a proctologist name Dr. Eugene Butt (look it up its true!).  The preparation was intense, the singing and dancing warm up routine was in full flight.  With steely resolve in our eyes and ponytails bobbing in unison, the best looking football side ever to grace the unhallowed turf of Batterham Reserve, took to the field. We knew we were in for a torrid affair as the Baysies were a bigger, tougher looking unit compared to out petite princesses.  The game was a tight struggle with no quarter given or asked.  The biggest margin throughout the day was just 7 points and our girls remained steadfast throughout, sticking to the game plan and eventually running out winners by just 2 point in a game that could have gone either way.  A special shout out to Lexy, who rucked for almost the entire game and was truly the difference in the end.   Enola starred up forward, kicking the winning goal in an equal best on ground performance and well done to Bridget, Alana and Alice who took on the midfield rolls in a relentless fashion. Well done to all the girls for a terrific game and congratulations on a great season so far.

Final Score:  Mitcham 4.4.28 d Bayswater 4.2.26

Ferntree Gully v Mitcham

Under 17 (Coach: Cam Horsey)

Today we ventured down to Ferntree Gully Reserve, our new home ground for this finals campaign.  We took on Lilydale in what was always going to be an even contest and where the victor would have to be at their best to advance through to the big dance in a couple of weeks.  The coach was nervous on the drive down the freeway.  Usually there is a lot of chatter in the car, but this time there was total silence for the 40-minute trip.  On arrival you could feel the nerves in the air as the boys mingled around the rooms before the time came to get the battle gear on.  The boys had a big game to put together and also had Jayden playing his 100th game.   The great story about Jaydos is that he has been a part of this group for a long time and has always played outside his age group and never once has been intimidated by the larger boys, always putting the team first.  Well-done mate!  In the closing minutes before running out on the ground, the feeling was electric in the rooms and everybody knew their role to play to get us across the line.  The start was crucial.  From the first bounce, Lilydale jumped out the box and put us under immense pressure.  Our backline held strong, but Lilydale were still able to force a major.  We looked flat and I was beginning to curse the week off.  As the quarter went on we started to get a feel for the pace of the game and started to win our own ball.  Although we had a couple of shots on goal, we just couldn’t get the six pointer we desperately craved for.  At the change, the coaching staff calmed them down and reminded them of who they are and what they can do when they play as a team.  At the start of the second quarter we clicked and three quick goals put a buffer on the scoreboard. Although we didn’t get another major in the quarter, we started to have control around the ground.  At the main break the coaches were on to the boys about keeping control, sticking to the game plan and to fight like hell until we get across the line.  We knew that Lilydale would come out hard at us in the second half.   The third quarter was an arm wrestle, with Mitcham still holding on to a lead but I felt we were gaining confidence in each other as the game went on.  Our mids were starting to work harder, our wings and forwards winning their positions and our backline holding as strong as ever.  We could win this if we just maintained the aggression.  At the final break it was do or die for Lilydale, but as a group we felt strong.   We answered everything that they threw at us in the last and we were able to score against some heavy defending.  It was brilliant to watch the boys coming off the ground knowing that they have only completed part of the job.  We now move forward into the Grand Final where we must raise the bar to bring home the cup.  Mentions to some outstanding players on the day who worked tirelessly all day - Tommy Stingell for his BOG performance, where he sometimes had to compete against three players and still won.  Jaydos for his fantastic work in the forward line, snagging three, Horse for his tireless work across the wing, Maxxy for his work down back and through the middle, Kev for answering the call for a lift in the second half, JP for his run and carry, Tayles for his tap work and control around the ground and Timmy for his spark across HF prompting some to want to tear his head off!  There was an effort from everyone involved on the day.  This team plays as one and we look forward to the next encounter!  Go Tiges!!!!!

Final Score:  Mitcham 6.14.50 d Lilydale 3.11.29
