Under 8 Mitcham Yellow by Coach Craig Love
We played North Ringwood Black at Quambee Reserve. We started the game on fire with great teamwork and a few early goals. For the 4 quarters, the boys did everything I asked, being first to the ball, loud voices and a lot of encouragement to each other. There were some great passages of play with Thomas Linnett having a bounce down the wing and kicking perfectly to Darcey Poynter resulting in a nice goal. Preston Sleap applied some terrific pressure down back, Fletcher Marini did some fantastic runs, Cooper was a ball magnet, Riley did some fantastic ruck work and all game and our defence held firm against some tough opposition with some great marks down back by Haydn and Billy. It was a great first off game for the team and definitely something that we can build on. A special mention goes to Thomas Linnett who was awarded the best player by North Ringwood. A big thank-you to North Ringwood for loaning us players each quarter too. Well-done Tigers!
Best: Thomas, Riley, Cooper, Preston, Haydn, Fletcher, Billy, Darcey, Ruben, Declan, Charlie and Blake
UNDER 9 YELLOW by Coach Josh McConnell
A very special day for our players - one of the first teams playing on the new turf and didn’t they do themselves and the MJFC proud! We have had 7 new players join or team this season and all of them played great games. Once all the players got the hang of the open spaces the run started and we placed a heap of pressure on the opposition, which allowed us a plethora of shots on goal. Our 3rd and 2nd year players continued to show their skill improvement throughout the game and their run and use of the ball is second to none. Our first Captain for 2017 was Danish Latif who lead from the front and did not stop running and presenting himself to get the ball. Henry Ridgway in his first game was great at getting in front and created many opportunities for his teammates. Lucas Hayes has a touch of class about him and in a couple of weeks will be running rings around the opposition in the forward line. Although every player in the team could have won an award, three of new players stood out. William Jess showed huge courage all day and in the last quarter took a great mark running back into a pack which resulted in him have a heavy collision. Although the collision resulted in a bloody nose he - did not take his eyes or hands of the ball and was our first award winner. Oscar Tribolet showed all game that he wanted to be the first to ball, starting in the middle early and then right through until he kicked a great goal in the last quarter. He used his height well in his first game and was our second award winner. Javier Petrilli has the skills of a veteran and ran fantastically well creating many clearances out of the middle. His use of the ball by foot and hand was exceptional and brought his teammates into the game, which won Javier the 3rd award this week. All our award winners are lucky enough to receive a great meal and milkshake provided by our club sponsors at Two Brothers Cafe. It was an amazing first game and has set up what looks like a great year of football ahead.
UNDER 10 YELLOW by Coach Mark Butler
After a mix up with the ground location, we took on North Ringwood in great conditions at Quambee Reserve. We won our fair share of contests in the first quarter and our captain Mason took a great contested mark and goaled to give us a real boost. However we fell away in the second and third quarters, loosing our positional structure, which had held us in good stead early in the game. We fought back well in the last but couldn't capitalize on our chances and eventually fell short by a couple of goals. A lot to like, but a bit to work on too!

The Under 11’s played their first game in A-Grade against Lysterfield Teal at Walker Park. We got out of the blocks really well kicking the first 2 goals of the game with an ever-increasing wind behind our backs. The second quarter saw us kicking into the wind where the backline managed to hold Lysterfield to 1 goal and we managed to kick one too. The last half saw our midfield and backline stand strong, being able to outlast Lysterfield and their constant forward pressure. It was a great start from the boys and gives us something to build on for after the school holidays. Well-done Tigers!
Final Score: Mitcham 4.3.27 d Lysterfield 2.3.15.
Goals: Will 2, Christian and Aiden
Best: Rupert, Hamish, Hudson, Lachlan and Luke M.

Black armbands were worn all round in honour of the young Boronia jnr football player that lost his battle with cancer. "First at the footy" is a common phrase you hear often in the rooms and when you do it for 4 quarters you often win!
Final Score: Mitcham 9.8.62 d Boronia 0.1.1
Best: Liam, James, Matty, and Xavier
Goals: Liam 3, Loal 3, Oscar 2, James 1
Under 12 Girls by Coach Ruby Schneider
The girls played their first official match of the year at Walker Park against Montrose. Although the day didn't go our way we were happy to see that all the girls had a go throughout the whole game. The first gamers all stood up and got involved with the footy, especially Sienna, Hannah & Taryn who tackled their way through the game and got down and did the hard work to retrieve the footy. Would also like to mention the hard work of Phoebe who played a great game and never stopped trying as well as having the loudest voice on the field. Gemma. H has also improved out of sight, taking a great mark, kicking the footy beautifully and also laid some of the best tackles for the day. Big congratulations to Sienna, Lauren, Hannah, Caitlin, Jessica, Gemma.N, Taryn, Taya and Keyani for playing their very first official game of footy!
Final Score: Montrose: 6.3.39 d Mitcham: 0.0.0
Under 13's by Coach Jason Philactides
We had the perfect start to the season. We started slowly, trailing at quarter time, but the intent to move the football the way we train was visible. It was a good effort considering the breeze was strong that we were kicking into. For the second quarter we reset and started to play with confidence. From that point on we never looked back. The ball movement around the ground was exactly the way we trained and the skill level was incredibly high. There were some great individual performances but the things that get us over the line are the 1 percenters. The shepherds, blocks, tackles, and talk were all significant contributors to our win. It was great having our new boys fit right in – every one of them played exceptionally well. Congrats to James on his outstanding game. In my opinion, he was the best player on the ground. What a great way to start the season. Also Jack and JP did great jobs. Jack provided a lot of run and pushed the ball forward to where JP was able to provide a contest. JP was exceptional kicking six goals. Well -done boys!
Final Score: Mitcham 9.5.59 d Rowville Knights 7.3.45
Goals: JP 6, Raph 1, James 2.

The U14's ventured out to Mooroolbark for our round 1 clash. We started the game with great endeavour restricting the home team to 3 goals with the wind in the first quarter. Unfortunately we failed to capitalise in the second, only kicking 1 major with the breeze and leaking a couple into it. The second half we tried hard but we were unable to put any scoreboard pressure on our opposition. Overall it was a good effort for the first round against a very good team and I look forward to continual improvement.
Final Score: Mooroolbark 16.19.115 d Mitcham 2.6.18
Best: Ethan Wu, Dom, Pat, Sam, Alex and Declan

Under 14 Girls by Coach Leigh Walters
Our first Under 14 girls team took on Bayswater at Bayswater. With some girls playing the first game there was excitement in the rooms before the game. The girls were fantastic for 3 of the 4 quarters against an opposition that were a lot bigger and stronger than us. All game they continued to run and carry the ball and were trying to be creative by sharing the ball around amongst their teammates. With no bench to call on they continued to show courage to go in and get the football, with all the girls contributing to a good win.
Final Score: Mitcham 9.4.58 d Bayswater 5.3.39
Best: Marissa, Megan, Sabrina, Riley and Maddy

We’re Baaaaaack! Resplendent in shiny boots and shiny hair the best looking side ever to grace the hallowed turf of the MCG of the east returned to continue their football journey. A different look side, but with the same steely resolve, I’m not really sure but the ground looked like it was brand new - the green, green grass contrasting seamlessly with the fake tans, playing (versing) the undermanned (womanned) Waverley Blues. From the outset the Tigresses stalked the Blues in an unrelenting fashion, wearing them down at every turn. Big shout out to the new chicks - Caileigh (Racehorse), Shadae (Smooth operator), Daria (the Russian assassin), Georgia Drake (The Duck) and Tay McCall (T-mac). Well played girls a great first ever game. A couple of weeks off now before the long winter campaign, so have a great holiday, go for a run, have a kick and enjoy the Easter eggs!
PS - We won by 8 odd goals. Well done to the goal kickers, you know who you are. Best on - Bluey, Lana, Midge, Princess, Clarky and TJ.
Under 17 by Coach Cam Horsey
Today the Under 17’s travelled to Norwood for the first game of the season. This game was always going to be a difficult one to win as the team was going in to the game with 6 players away and injury and sickness affecting a couple of others. Addressing the players before the game, I asked for commitment from each player to win their position and try to get a lead in the first and see how it goes from there. The boys came out firing and showed true commitment to the cause and attacked from the start. We forced the ball forward at every occasion and had Norwood chasing tail from the start. The forward line worked really well, keeping the area clear, allowing tails to get into open space to score a few majors with a couple of goals coming from our half forwards. The defence led by Tommy was impenetrable and our wings and mids giving our defence plenty of options to clear the area. We continued the pressure after the first quarter with everyone winning their position, going into the main break with a handy lead. The third quarter Norwood gave a bit of a yelp kicking the first couple but our boys rose to the challenge getting a couple of goals back, giving us a handy lead into the last where the difference in the scores remained about the same. It was as good a win as you could get considering the numbers looked a bit shaky before the game. A big thank you goes out to Jules and Micky for coming up from the under 15’s to help out and they certainly didn’t look out of place with back making an impact at different stages of the game. A couple of players need a mention for outstanding efforts throughout the game: Stinger, Alex C, Danny, Tayls, Cam, Zebby and Timmy. Well-done boys. Go Tiges!!!
Final Score: Mitcham 10.9.69 d Norwood 4.4.28
