The first Presentation Night of Season 2014 for the Mitcham Junior Football Club was held last Friday night (July 25th) at the Mitcham Sporting Club. As is our wish to keep these nights in house, as our club has grown, it has become impossible to have all of our teams present on the one night. With Gavin Ward hosting the evening, well over 100 people were packed into a room done up in yellow and black to see trophies presented to our Under 9’s, 10’s and 12’s. A fantastic night was had with plenty of pizza for dinner, lots of reminiscing on the season just gone and lots of talk about the seasons ahead.
The Under 9’s kicked the night’s awards off with their coach Carlo Fanfulla presenting each and every Under 9’s player with a trophy. It was great to have our resident photographer, Graham Bradtke on hand to take a photo of each player as they accepted their trophy from Carlo. There were lots of smiles and lots of very proud parents watching on. The club wishes to thank Carlo for a fantastic effort in his first year of coaching. Carlo put his hand up very early on and did a fantastic job with a very young list of players. As the season progressed, the kids began to play some really good football and Carlo and his team should be congratulated. Coaching is not easy at any age group but at Under 9’s you really have your hands full. Carlo paid tribute to his staff; Assistant coach Paul O’Sullivan, Runner Sandi Marini, Trainer Kerry Melville and Team Manger Kathy Benis, who all pulled together to make the year a memorable first year of football for all these kids. It was a tough year on the field for this team, playing teams who were more top age and experienced than them, but it WILL benefit them in the long run. Well-done to the staff, players and parents of the Under 9’s!
The Under 10’s followed with Coach Jason Philactides presenting trophies to all of his boys. The Under 10’s also had a good season and although the scores don’t end up on the scoreboard at this level, the kids tell us that they won 6 or 7 games for the year. Jason really worked hard with the team throughout the season and had them playing a terrific brand of football at times. A game based on run and carry, slick handball and doing all the “one percenters” to help their team-mates were the highlights and to see this develop and become second nature to the team was a joy to watch. Jason has played a lot of football around the traps and coached at senior level. He was a natural with the kids and had their respect from the first time he spoke to them as a group. Jason spoke glowingly of the effort the kids put in during the season and he is really looking forward to coaching them next year at Under 11 level. Every coach needs good support staff and Jason had a great group around him, from Assistant Coach Paul Goldsmith, Runner Rob Cavicchia, Trainer Jodi Cavicchia and of course his Team Manager and wife, Annette Philactides. Well done to everyone involved.
The highlight of the evening was big Gav rounding all the Under 9 and Under 10 players into a circle to sing the theme song. It was a fantastic rendition, done with the passion of seasoned veterans of the club. The future is in good hands!
The Under 12’s completed the night’s awards. The Under 12’s were dealt a very tough hand before the season had started when the EFL decided to put them up a grade after losing an elimination final in season 2013. It was always going to be hard and was made even harder when they were struck down by injuries once the season got underway. To the team’s credit, they never gave up and right down to the last game continued to support each other and represent the club with dignity. Coach Marcus Webb is also stepping back from coaching duties. The club would like to thank Marcus for the work he has done with this group of boys over four years. Marcus put his hand up to coach at under 9 level and had rode the bumps with these boys ever since. Well done to Marcus, Assistant Coaches Peter Walsh and Shane Dickson, Runner Mark Brown, Trainer April Walsh and a big thank you to Team Manager Michael Frogley.
Under 12 Award winners were:
Best & Fairest: Luke Brito-Babapulle
Best & Fairest Runner Up: Corey Dickson
Most Improved: Danny Nguyen
Most Courageous: Lincoln Francise-Brown
