This weekend saw the Mitcham Junior Football club have two teams playing in the first week of Finals action. It has been a fantastic effort by both the Under 11s and the Under 15s on making it though to Finals. The Under 11s were struggling for numbers during the pre-season and through hard work they were able to get a good team together both on and off the field. The Under 15s, after winning the Premiership in D Division last season, have done a sensational job to finish third on the ladder in C Division this season. Although the results in the first week of Finals did not go the way we all would have wished for, the MJFC as a whole is very proud of both teams!

The under 11s started the day off against North Ringwood at Koonung reserve in North Blackburn for the elimination final. The breeze was a factor, especially for the first half. As discussed at presentation night, having the right attitude on game day was one area identified for improvement from the weekend before against the same team. The boys to their credit brought a terrific attitude and nearly all the boys could lay claim to playing some of their best footy for the year in this final. The attitude was sensational from start to finish. We got off to a good start with 2 goals in the first quarter but by half time North Ringwood had 3 on the board. We had the ball in our forward line a lot in the third and fourth quarters and it was very exciting. We had a very close shot on goal ruled a point in the third and a few more attempts, but we just couldn’t quite turn the hard work into goals and ultimately went down by three points. The Club is very proud of the boys, and the boys should be very proud of their efforts too. Michael and Harry were terrific, along with Julian, Lincoln, Emi, Max W and Luke who worked hard all day. Danny and Ryan were also very good early in the game. Callum, Josh, Max M and Harrison all put in some terrific defensive efforts and Jarrod and Jack were exciting up forward. Riley, Ari, Geromi, Matthew, Elijah, Sam and Lachlan also all really played their roles well. Well done boys and we hope to see you all back again next year.

Final Score: North Ringwood 3.2.20 d Mitcham 2.5.17

The Under 15s traveled down Whitehorse road to Blackburn to take on a Lilydale team that had only lost one game for the season and appeared to be at full strength (Nice gamesmanship from the Lilydale coach! LOL). The first half proved even and although the Tigers went into the game with a below full strength team, they proved that they can match it with the best and showed what can be achieved with hard work and discipline to follow the game plan. Unfortunately for the Tigers they simply run out of steam in the second half against a Lilydale team that will prove hard to beat in the coming weeks. The good news is the boys have earned the right for the double chance and will be looking for a four-quarter effort next week against Knox at Forest Hill.

Final Score: Lilydale 14.14-98 d Mitcham 3.6-24
