Welcome to Season 2017

Welcome to Season 2017

The first 2 weeks of the 3 week grading for Competitive Juniors is now available online.

Week 3 of grading will be published by Tuesday following week 2 and the full Competitive Juniors Fixtures will be released on the Tuesday after the final grading round.

Important note: All teams are required to print electronic team sheets prior to each game this year. Please contact your club for details and how to guides.

What age groups are graded?

All age groups U11 and up are graded. The following formats apply:

U11 Girls only (play one full length game each week)

U12 9’s (Play 2 games (2 x 30min) at the same venue of 2 x 15min halves each – Half Pitch)

U12 A&B, U14 A&B, U16 and U18 (Play 2 games (2 x 30min) at the same venue of 2 x 15min halves each – Full Pitch)

Why are the age groups different this year?

  • U12 9’s or U12

The sport governing body has recognised that skills development is greatly enhanced by retaining smaller format games for longer. All associations are being required to adopt a different standard for U12 going from full pitch to Half pitch 9v9.

This is a global change and is being implemented by our league in 2 steps. U12 in 2017 is split into full pitch for older players and U12 9’s for the younger players. In 2018, all U12 games will be half pitch 9v9 format.

  • All Girls U11

We are very pleased to have a full 6 U11 all girls teams for the inaugural all-girls competition in 2017.

  • U18 vs U16A & B

In 2017 we opened team entries for an U18 Saturday competition with a view to providing students entering the important Year 11 & 12 period of high-school an opportunity to play (for fun) on a Saturday without the pressure of training twice a week. We got one team entry for U18. To enable them to play, but also to signal very clearly to all of the U16’s who might be thinking there is no option other than the highly competitive Youth Competition next year, we have renamed the U16A competition U18’s and renamed the U16B competition U16 for 2017. The league will monitor the performances through grading to ensure this remains a safe option for all players. We are confident this initiative will greatly expand opportunity for players to extend their participation in soccer through the important years of year 11 & 12 with a combination of study, jobs and having fun.

How does grading work?

Teams will play each other and we will gather the results to assess performance imbalances. It is impossible to get every team even in performance, but where there are clear outliers in performance (high or low) the league can use the final 3rd week of grading to test if playing the team up or down will give a better result for equity. The grade into which teams are entered by their clubs is the assumed position of the team unless based on evidence the league determines otherwise. The final decision is the leagues but we will consult with clubs before taking a decision to change grade for any team.
