NEWS: Penultimate round in Geelong Region Men’s Div 1 offers interesting showdowns at both ends of t

GEELONG Region Men’s Division 1 Round 17 action will see some enthralling showdowns take place across the region this weekend, with the penultimate round set to have a major impact on the composition of the upcoming Top Four finals’ series.

Although the League title has already been sewn up by the rampaging Barwon in Men’s Division 1, the battle for second spot will be fought out between the currently second placed Rangers and third placed Breakwater Eagles.

Rangers will travel to Ocean Grove to tackle 4th placed Surfside Waves on Friday night, with the home side desperate to secure the last remaining play-off spot.

Fifth placed Lara United, which trails the Waves by just three points, is away to Barwon at Grovedale Reserve on Friday night. Although Dale Harris’ men suffered their first loss last weekend – ironically to Rangers – they will be keen to ensure they get back onto the winners’ list, ahead of the coming Finals’ series.

Also on Sunday, Breakwater Eagles will be keen to remain in contention for the second spot – and a home semi final – when they host 6th placed Barwon Heads at the White Eagle Club.

Meanwhile, on Friday night, an intriguing battle to avoid the dreaded relegation zone will be simultaneously contested in Torquay and Waurn Ponds.

At the Banyul Warri Reserve in Torquay North, second last placed Surf Coast will host 7th placed Drysdale, while at the Deakin University Sports Fields, 8th placed Deakin Ducks will go toe-to-toe with wooden spooners FC Leopold.
