Shady Punter Round 4 Preview
Laval Bombers (4) v West Island Wooders (1)
I’m going to call this game based on the assumption that Nathan Strom will play… but even if he does I still can’t see the Bombers beating the Wooders. The Wooders have too much firepower and with Phil Manassa back in the squad, this allows Robinson and Houvion even more freedom to get forward and bag goals. And how good was young Éric Chemin last week, in my opinion, he’ll be better than big brother PO. Expect both to have big impact.
Fairbrother is back for the Bombers but rumours have it Gavidia may be unavailable. Who will do “the job” on Petosa, because let’s face it, you basically need someone to sit on him to keep him quite. The Bombers will be delighted to have Barranco back but the Frenchman will be lacking serious match fitness and Petosa will eat him up. Without Bone again this weekend, the Bombers need Fairbrother rucking and not fullbck. Petosa can only be rubbing his hands with glee right now.
Basically this game will all come down to which midfield can feed their forward lines better or alternatively who can shut down the other teams supply. I think the Wooders will be too disciplined in this regard and will triumph.
My tip: Wooders by 4 goals, Rogers to be kept to just 2/3 goals and a card to be shown at some stage. Wooders / Bombers always produces a card.
Montreal Demons (3) v Old Montreal Dockers (2)
The Demons Management were very coy with details on player availability this weekend or maybe they just didn’t know and that doesn’t bode well. Both teams create chances but both are guilty of not exactly been 100% efficient either or 75% efficient at that… or even 50%, but hey they create!
I think we’ve seen the Dockers and what they can offer, they’re not as good as they would have hoped to be but they’re not bad either. To put it simply they’re kind of myahhh (this is not a typo, imitate a sheep and a cat at the same time and the sound you make represents what I think of the Dockers).
Whereas with the Demons, the jury is still out. Red hot one minute and awful the next. If Graham has he’s shooting boots on the Demons are a class act, but like often times before, he leaves them at home.
The Dockers have unearthed a potential future star in Killian Gerlach and he more than resolved the potential ruck problem last weekend in the absence of Junior and big Andy. The Dockers will be hoping for a big game from him again this weekend but it will be unfair of the Dockers to put so much reliance on a newbie. It’s time for veterans Shaughnessy, Andrada and Murphy to step up and be counted. Despite two wins the Dockers have disappointed me and I think it will continue this weekend. With or without Graham the Demons have more match winners than the Dockers and they will be the difference this weekend.
My tip: Demons by 10-15 points, O’ Farrell and Michelmore (again) to shine but Whyte is finally about to meet his match in the ruck.
NDG Giants (3) v Plateau Eagles (4)
When I was handed the two team sheets I shuddered. The Giants seem to be again without Falardeau but otherwise are almost at full strength. On the other hand though, the Eagles are depleted, and severely so. Shady had hoped to see Gilmore back the Eagles jersey this week but is seems I’ll have to wait just a bit longer. And it looks like she’ll be joined on the sideline by a who’s who of women’s footy in Jane Fenelon, Lindsay Belzie, Phoebe McCallum, Jenna Haverfield, Robyn Graham and … Dawn Manhertz (has anyone seen Dawn?).
I still have high hopes for the Eagles this season but just not for this game. With Andrusyshyn and Dumais they still have two class footy players available to them and along with Marie Soleil they have the makings of a solid midfield. They will also be welcoming back from injury Team Canada elect Kathleen Zuk but these players aside they will have far to many rookies in this game to have an impact.
I think it may be a matter of the Eagles seeing out this game and welcoming back those missing from round four with huge open arms and progressing from there.
My tip: Giants by 40+, Polus to kick her first AFL Quebec goal but Eagles to unearth a few more potential stars.
