Shady Punter Round 3 Review

With only one more round to go until the mid season break it’s starting to become a little clearer exactly where each team is relative to each other but we can talk about that again, for now here is my round three recap.

After a slight anomaly last weekend in their loss to the Demons it would seem the Wooders are back to normal with their win over the Old Montreal Dockers… Oh, and they did this all without Phil Manassa. A massive twelve goal haul spread between the usual suspects of Fabio Petosa (5) and Dan Robinson (7) was enough to see the Wooders over the line in this exciting game. The Dockers will rue a whole host of missed opportunities (13 behinds) in a game they could have easily won. They will however take comfort in the strong debut of Killian Gerlach in the ruck and their relatively even spread of goal scorers (6 in total). The Wooders also had some very impressive debuts in Eric Chemin, Manuel Molina and Mounir Bouchbika and coach Robinson would have also been delighted to welcome back Ian Martin into the Wooders jersey.

The second game of the day was a classic and might well be remembered as one of the games of the year come end of season. The NDG Giants took the honours but only just against the Carleton Warriors. The Warriors were without the influential Holly Constanza and at times it showed but nothing can be taken away from a magnificent Giants performance. Moreau was her usual best, and five goals will prove that, but the Giants were also well served by Bureau in midfield and Frankie Benedetti in defence who is getting better each week she plays. Nguyen bagged herself four goals for the Warriors while the big summer signing Bartulovic, grabbed the other. A nail bitter of a game throughout, it was tied with only moments remaining on the clock, but up stepped the pocket rocket Moreau to slot through a 6 pointer and give the Giants their first points of the season.

The second women’s game was a strange one. The Eagles, still without Gilmore, won the second through to the fourth quarter. Unfortunately they forgot about the first quarter and six unanswered goals had this game all but over before the second quarter had even started. Maybe the late arrival of Belzie didn’t help but the Eagles now sit at the foot of the table. Presseau, Kennedy and Cambridge had fantastic games for the Shamrocks especially in that first quarter dismantling. But credit where credit is due, the Eagles like in game one rallied hard after the first quarter and matched their opponents throughout with Fenelon, Andrusyshyn and the tardy Belzie all impressive. Like the Wooders, the Eagles had some impressive debuts too in Pine and Cueillierrier and the future bodes well for the Eagles.

The last game of the day rounded out was a fantastic day of AFL Quebec footy. It was remarkably similar to game one in that the loosing team had more scoring opportunities, just couldn’t convert, had a better spread of goal scorers while the winning team took their fewer opportunities better but had a more narrow spread of goal scorers.

The Bombers were well served by Auger throughout who proved to be a real thorn in the Demons defence finding space time and time again and who finished the game with four goals. Todd Rogers finished the day with seven goals and in Shady’s opinion a best on ground performance, while I finally got to witness Nathan Strom in action and he too was impressive throughout. The Demons like the Dockers had multiple goal scorers and coach O’Farrell would have been happy with the debut of Dillon Coffey, the continued emergence of Matt Ingersole and the return of Morgan Whyte to the Demons colours. What he wouldn’t have been happy with though was the 15 behinds his team kicked, 10 in the first half which could have put the game beyond doubt but didn’t.
