Shady Punter Round 2 Preview - Men

Laval Bombers versus Old Montreal Dockers
Vanier College

This match looms as an intriguing battle with both teams coming off contrasting results in round one.

The Dockers were slow out of the blocks against a highly fancied Demons side, but were able to swing the match in their favour by getting on top of the stoppages late in the match. The Bombers, on the other hand, came out all guns blazing early against the Wooders, but were quick to jump out of the kitchen when it got a little too hot for them in the second half. Shady Punter knows that Fairbrother has been preaching the importance of 4 quarter effort to his chargers this week, and Shaughnessy has provided each of his teammates with a can of Red Bull to keep them awake during the Metro trip on the way to the game.

One of the keys for a potential round 2 Bomber’s victory rests with shutting down a wily old veteran by the name of Darren “The Dazzler” Murphy. The Dazzler looked Father Time in the face with a wry smile last week and put in a virtuoso 5 goal effort against a shell shocked Demons. There is no doubt in Shady Punter’s mind that Murphy’s name would be on top of the Bomber’s white board this week, especially after the spicy little stoush that took place at ¾ time between umpire Murphy and a few Bombers players still a little grumpy after the supplements scandal.

This match will see some fascinating one-on-one matchups; none more so than the potential mouth watering contest across the Bomber’s half-forward line between Shaughnessy and the Rogers brother who kicks on the wrong side. The winner of this dual might just help his team go home with the chocolates, but Shady Punter can’t help but feel this game will be won at the stoppages.

The Dockers were able to win the clearances in round 1 (despite losing the hitouts) and they will be hoping that the likes of Robson, Fellows and Coogen will continue to develop their chemistry to ensure a repeat performance this week. Conversely, the Bombers will be looking to get first use of the footy from Fairbrother in the ruck, to bring the fleet footed Rogers, Rotaru and Boulerice into the match.

Shady Punter thinks that the Bombers will have too much fire in the belly after last week’s fadeout, and players like Bone will concentrate more on kicking goals in rd 2 rather than doing handstands.

Bombers by 20 points

West Island Wooders versus Montreal Demons
Vanier College

The second course of the day promises to be a mouth-watering encounter, particularly if your taste buds are screaming out for mismatch mashed potato.

Coming off a first-up win over the listless Bombers, the Wooders will be high on confidence and possibly other substances, while the Demons are hoping to smoke the victory pipe for the first time in 2015 after being outclassed by the Dockers in round one.

On paper, this seems to be a one-sided affair. But let Shady tell you something, dear readers - whilst paper may have a high utility value, it’s also used to wipe our behind (a fact the Demons coach knows only too well).

We need to look no further than the corresponding fixture last year to realise that whenever these two teams go toe-to-toe, ladder positions don’t matter. On that occasion, the Demons and Wooders played out a thrilling draw.

Through the agency of commanding presence Fabio ‘Dukes’ Petosa and Daniel ‘Here’s to You Mrs’ Robinson, the Wooders boast the sort of potency up forward that should come with a health warning on the label, but it’s Phil ‘BFG’ Manassa’s tap work to the likes of the Flying Frenchman Houvian and PO Chemin that allow the forward line to function with killer precision.

Andrew ‘Uncle Drew’ Michelmore may just hold the key to his Demons’ fortunes this week as he shoulders the work load in the ruck with the ongoing absence of Morgan ‘It Doesn’t Matter If You’re Black Or’ Whyte a concern.

Michelmore was impressive in his team’s first round loss, and will be relying on the likes of rookies Simon ‘Rio’ Carnevale and Matt ‘Pun-Proof’ Ingersole to play their part to help out Luke Anderson in defence if the Demons are to stage the biggest upset since Team USA’s unlikely victory in the 1980 Winter Olympic hockey gold medal game.

If the Dees pull this off, it will be the Miracle on Grass.

Wooders by 63 points.
