AFL Quebec 2015 Womens Tournament Round Up

AFL Quebec has been organizing a Pre-season tournament since 2012. This tournament has hosted a plethora of teams from Boston, New York, Nova Scotia, Ottawa, Toronto and more recently Hamilton, Ontario. Initially vamped as both a Women and Men’s competition, in 2014 renovations to one of the field spaces meant a decision to downsize the event needed to be made.

With a limited opportunity for women to play the sport in the North Eastern regions of Canada and the USA, the choice was apparent. An investment in women’s AFL was needed.

Obviously, one stand-alone annual event, in itself, is not sufficient to propel the explosion of the growth of the game. Rather, it served as a springboard by which clubs and teams may recruit for their up and coming seasons. Many people, who have dedicated much time and effort to the growth of both women and men’s football, have been instrumental in creating a momentum in the region. Without naming all involved, at the forefront of this concerted effort would be Ronan Shaughnessy of AFL Quebec, Margo Legault of the Montreal Angels, Andrea Murphillas of the New York Magpies, Michael Sheppard of the Boston Demons and Emma Dickinson of the Ottawa Swans.

The statistics of the event speak for themselves. 78 players, 90% of which were Canadian or American and 1 in every 4 players was playing for the first time. Tremendous growth and we applaud the efforts of all of the volunteers, coaches and supporters who made this day a success.

Congratulations to the New York Magpies who were crowned the 2015 AFL Quebec Women’s Champions. Well deserved, the New York Magpies have made the annual trip to Montreal since 2012 and always show up ready to play. They battled on the day and made a clean sweep of the tournament. We wish all teams the best of luck in their up and coming seasons and encourage all to continue their efforts to growing the wonderful sport we all love so much.
