The BC Footy executive kicked off 2016 by meeting on Monday at Moose's Down Under to discuss details for the upcoming season.
Key highlights from the meeting included the following:
- We are excited to announce Vancouver will host the inaugural Canadian Championships with provincial rep teams travelling from Alberta, Atlantic Canada/Quebec, British Columbia and Ontario. The tournament will be held in June for Men's and Women's teams. Details to follow soon. Canadians interested in representing their province should contact one of the BC Footy Clubs
- The league is excited to launch the Vancouver Vixens women's football team that will play games throughout the season as well as compete at the Canadian National Championship
- The league agreed they would support the new team Aussie Rules team in Victoria BC by scheduling a tournament game and or a BC representative team training camp in Victoria
- We will introducing more "Development" games to the 2016 fixture to help new players get more playing time at an easier level to develop their skills and understanding of the game
- New rules and regulations and the format of the BC Footy 2016 schedule were also discussed and will be ratified at the next meeting. Such issues discussed included:
- Team sizes on game day including limiting the bench to 6
- The minimum number of Canadian players required on the field at any one time for the 2016 season
- Introducing a more objective approach to go/no-go procedure for assessing field conditions before games begin
- The league discussed introducing new concussion and first aid protocols for games and decided to investigate a paid presence for game day
- We are still seeking someone to fill the position of Secretary. Commitment of 3-5 hours per month and looks great on a resume. Contact Lex Perry findlex@gmail.com for details.
2016 promises to be another great year of further growth for BC Footy as new players continue to flock to this fantastic game!
