Zero tolerance stance towards referee abuse

A recent GPT hearing in Wagga, relating to on and off-field abuse and intimidation of a referee, has led to three significant suspensions being issued.

FWW took a strong position on this matter and charged three individuals (including a spectator) under the FFA Spectator Code of Conduct, the FFA National Code of Conduct, and the FWW Grievance and Disciplinary Regulations with bringing the game into disrepute.

The sanctions imposed by the independent GPT include:

  • A 18 month suspension
  • A 12 month suspension
  • A 12 fixture suspension

"The sentences handed down by the GPT send a strong message to everyone involved in football that abusive behaviour towards referees, or anyone else involved in the sport, is not tolerated", Football Wagga Wagga President Erwin Budde says. "People are on notice that they should treat everyone with respect, including referees".
