Canada’s Northern Lights Defeat Great Britain

The Northern Lights, Canada’s national Australian Football team, defeated the Great Britain Swans on Sunday to finish at the top of their pool in the 2017 International Cup. A hard contest on both sides, Canada was able to hold back Great Britain’s advances, giving up only three points.

The Lights opened scoring in the first quarter with two goals from Nicola Kirwan and vice captain Hilary Perry.  A second goal from Kirwan in the second quarter gave Canada a dominant 24-3 lead at halftime.

After a goalless third quarter, the Northern Lights responded with a goal from captain Aimee Legault and held Great Britain scoreless in the second half of the game.

The final score was 4.10.34 for Canada’s Northern Lights to Great Britain’s 0.3.3.

Canada advances to face the United States in a semi-final game on Tuesday.  The winner goes on to compete in the International Cup Grand Final, scheduled for Saturday, August 19 at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.
