Application for national coaches now open

AFL Canada is now accepting applications for the Northern Lights and Northwind coach positions. These positions will be effective until International Cup 2020.

Northern Lights Coach, Jason Arnold
Jason Arnold has informed the board of his intention not to re-apply as Northern Lights Coach.

Since his appointment in 2012, Jason has led the Northern Lights program with a clear vision. Early in his tenure, he asked the players if they wanted to be known as amateur athletes who play for fun, or take it to the next level and become elite athletes who train hard not just the season of IC but every season in between.

There was overwhelming support for wanting to make the Canadian Lights program an elite program, and one to strive for. Jason has a clear passion for footy and for helping set people up for success. Though he had players all across Canada and Australia, Jason tried his best to bring the groups of people together using every means and channel possible and formed a unified team.

He set up testing sessions so girls could measure their own improvements. He made the program so desirable that playing for the Northern Lights became a dream of many women footy players across Canada.

Behind the scenes Jason worked tirelessly. He was meticulously organized in ensuring all details of tournaments and events were thought through. His focus on detail and ambition to give girls the greatest opportunity they could have allowed female athletes the discipline to encourage them to pursue their goals. He reached out to other coaches and arranged tournaments, such as in London in 2017, to help continue to develop Canadian women's football.

He arranged training camps across Canada and would fly to these camps so he could see the players and talent himself as well as endless other work behind the scenes.

Though this was a volunteer position, Jason treated this as a full time job. His devotion and ambition for the Northern Lights was very noticeable and he set the benchmark for women’s football internationally. As a result of his leadership the Northern Lights took home the title at IC14 and were runners up in a hard fought close grand final in IC17.

Thanks to all of this, Jason has helped build and set the standard for women's footy across Canada. His efforts and passion ensured the program be professional and desirable and for that, we want to extend our most heartfelt thanks.
