Women’s Only Coaching and Refereeing Course
Last month on March 23, South East Queensland NRL Development held a “Women’s Only” training day at the Brisbane Broncos grounds – allowing women with an interest in furthering their commitment with the game to gain new skills in a supportive environment.
In a full day; the 26 participants were given the choice of doing their Modified Games Course (coaching 6-12 year olds) or the International Games Course (coaching 13 years and up) with qualified game development staff; while all participants also completed a Referees Accreditation course.
While women are encouraged to attend the general coaching courses which are held regularly throughout the season at various venues – event organiser Wayne Weeks said it was a good introduction for those women who might not feel as comfortable taking part and asking questions in front of a larger group.
Angela Blinco from the Bribie Island Warrigals said it was a good way to learn more about the game and she would recommend other women attend future courses.
“It’s a great idea (to host a day like this); it can be very male-dominated so sometimes you are not confident of taking on these other roles (beyond a team manager),” she said.
“I haven’t coached before … (but this course) has given us some idea and drills and basic skills to be able to coach a team with our clubs.
“(I think) with a lot of us being mothers (of juniors) at the club – we have a lot of skills with organising but this takes us through everything else we need to know.”
