Brisbane & District Women's Rugby League News
ROUND 2 of the Brisbane and District Women’s Rugby League competition saw the Deception Bay Bombers claim their first two points on the ladder against Carina at Deception Bay Sports Ground.
Deception Bay kicked off to Carina and both teams were fired up and ready to put on a good show, however, a Carina fumble only a minute in gave Deception Bay a chance to attack Carina’s line. While they managed to gain another set, they were not able to break Carina's defence.
Carina’s first attack with the ball had them gaining great metres, however, they too were unable to break the line. Both teams went back and forth for the first 10 minutes with some great force from both teams’ forward packs, creating some powerful hit ups.
Twelve minutes in, a high kick on the 5th and last by Deception Bay caused a bad bounce on the line for Carina, and Deception Bay centre Natasha Newton capitalised to scoop up the ball up and cross the try line to score their first try for the season. A successful conversion kick by Maria Tautasi put the score to 6-0 to Deception Bay.
A great line break from Deception Bay second rower Taylor Renshaw gave her side another opportunity to score. A great offload from Alicia Ryan sent Beth Horsburgh stepping around Carina's defence and over the try line. An unsuccessful conversion put Deception Bay’s score to 10-0.
With five minutes to halftime, a punishing run from Renshaw saw her barge through Carina's defence and over the try line for Deception Bay once again, pushing the score to 14-0.
Carina still held their heads up and took advantage of the clock and with only two minutes left to the break, Carina’s Atina Currie magnificently stepped in and out of Deception Bays defence line to score Carina's first try. The kick was unsuccessful and they went into halftime with the score 14-4 to Deception Bay.
The first 10 minutes of the second half had both teams on the back foot, with both teams causing a few errors each. However, a brilliant run by Carina's halfback Carolyn Muchon gained some much needed metres for Carina.
At the 14-minute mark, Carina's five-eighth Jessica Potts crossed the line to give her side another four points, putting the score to 14-8. Once again, Carina attacked the line, but Deception Bay’s defence kept them out.
Ten minutes from fulltime saw a demolishing run from 10m by Deception Bay front rower Maria Tautasi, which saw her cross the try line to put the score to 18-8.
For the next few minutes, both teams went set for set completing a few each, however, a knock on by Carina in their own 10m set Deception Bay up once again, with Renshaw crossing the line for her second try of the game, and adding the final points to the board with a full time score of 22-8. It was a great game to watch.
The rest of the round saw Beerwah beat the Swifts with a score of 122-0. Burleigh Bears took the win over Logan Brothers with a score of 52-8 and Souths Logan had a win over Aspley with a score of 66-0. Wynnum Manly lost on a forfeit against West Inala with a score of 55-0.
***Due to the Easter weekend this week and the Women's Interstate match being played on Sunday, April 7 at Davies Park, the competition now goes into a two-week break. Games are set to recommence the weekend of April 13.
