The 2015 AFL Youth Girls Championships will be conducted in Western Australia for the first time after the 2014 WA team won the Nationals for the first time from Vic Metro. The week long tournament in May will be played at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah (home of the Peel Thunderbirds). A Welcome Ceremony will open the Championships followed by games across 4 days before teams contest finals on Friday May 8.
City of Mandurah Mayor, Marina Vergone said it was fantastic to see female sport promoted and contested an a national stage.
“It’s an amazing opportunity for developing athletes to gain experience and for our local youth to be involved in an event of this calibre,” she said.
Eight teams will contest games across two pools with WA, Vic Metro, Queensland and Vic Country contesting pool A. Pool B will see a combined Northern Territory and Tasmania team compete against NSW/ACT, South Australia and the Woomeras. Indigenous girls who do not make their State team will come together to play in the Woomeras which also entails a strong education and leadership component for girls who have limited opportunities to pursue physical activity.
The umpires are included in the event as part of their talent pathway. AFL Manager Adam Davis will work closely with the WA Football Commission’s Darryl Sinclair and Dean Margetts to challenge and educate identified field umpires.
The local football community will be involved in clinics and will get behind the National event. Western Australia will be keen to retain their title in front of the home crowd whilst strong opposition should come from Queensland and Vic Metro.
Games will be livestreamed here beginning May 4.
