Maddison Smith to play for Melbourne in women’s curtain raiser
Clarence’s Maddison Smith will be living the dream of all young footballers this weekend when she steps onto the MCG to play for Melbourne in the inaugural women's curtain raiser against the Western Bulldogs.
The initiative is a major part of the AFL’s Women's Round which will be a celebration and recognition of women in the AFL.
Smith will travel to Melbourne Wednesday, meet her coaches on Thursday and will take part in a short training session as part of her preparation for the match.
After being overlooked in the inaugural women's draft in May Smith continued to play club football with the Clarence Women's Team in the Tasmanian Women's League and last week represented Tasmania at the National Womens Carnival in Cairns.
“I received a call two weeks ago to say that I had been brought into the squad. I’m really excited about having the opportunity to play on the MCG against the best female players in the country”, said Smith.
AFL Tasmania's Community Programs Manager, Brett Mansell said “It's great to see Maddison get this opportunity. She is an outstanding young lady who can flat out play. Our aim is to develop the female game in Tasmania to a standard where we are having multiple players involved at this level so it's great to get the ball rolling with Maddison.”
