Want to play netball in Wellington? Here's where to start!

2018 Winter Competition - ASB Sports Centre

Did you play netball while at school and want to get back into it? Perhaps you are new to Wellington? Maybe keen to try a new sport? Or are you just looking for a great chance to make new friends, socialise with your team mates or get fit in one of New Zealand’s top participation sports?

Netball Wellington Centre is one of five netball centres located within the Greater Wellington region.  Each Centre organises their own Club, Collegiate and/or Primary competitions, programmes and events to support player, coach, manager, umpire and bench official's participation in their own areas.  If not based within Wellington City you can access the links to the other four netball centres in the Greater Wellington region near the bottom of this page.

Netball Wellington Centre provides a variety of junior, social, development representative and competitive netball opportunities for females and males of all different ages and is responsible for organising the Saturday Winter Competition for college age upwards within the Wellington City area. Our competition caters for the most social of teams through to the Premier Competition which links in to competitions run within the wider Wellington region like the Regional Secondary Schools League (RSSL).

Around 250 teams from about 13 clubs, and 9 colleges and a number of independent teams play on Saturdays during the winter months.  Competitions are run across two venues - all Premier, Premier Reserve, Senior and Collegiate grades 1-3 play indoors at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie while the Collegiate grades 4-8 play outdoors at the Hataitai Netball Courts. The season runs from end of April through until late August and depending on which club you choose to approach, trials and registrations may get underway from mid-February onwards.  Check out the club websites/facebook links listed below and contact a club so you can get yourself registered to play for 2019.

Bear in mind that unlike other sports, clubs in Wellington do not operate on a geographical basis or have clubrooms attached therefore it does not matter where you are living within Wellington - anyone is free to join any club they choose so long as they can travel to attend trainings & games.  These are commonly held either indoors at the ASB Sports Centre, 72 Kemp Street, Kilbirnie or outdoors at the Hataitai Netball Courts, 43 Ruahine Street, Hataitai however some clubs use alternative venues.  This may be a deciding factor so be sure to check training/game locations upon enquiring about trials.

CLUB INFORMATION

 This information is designed to help you if:
- You are leaving school and want to keep playing netball;
- You are shifting to Wellington and want to find a club;
- You are returning to netball after a break;
- You are wanting to get into coaching a club team.

We have a number of playing options available for serious premier and representative players to the more social player.

Our Premier 1 competition comprising our top College and Club teams feeds up into the ANZ Premiership teams, Beko National League and representative teams.

Our senior grades are more focused on the social player where some teams opt to train, others do not - it really comes down to which club you choose.

If you are keen to play winter netball….

…. And you want to play at a competitive level in Wellington you need to look for a club which has Premier level teams.  It is good to trial at a club which has a range of teams within each grade so that you get a feel for where you belong and slot in correctly for your skill level. Within the Netball Wellington Centre competition we have a number of grades ranging from Premier 1 (top), Premier 2, Premier 3, Premier Reserve 1 down to Premier Reserve 4 followed by Senior 1 to Senior 7.  Premier grades play 4 x 15 minute quarters games while Premier Reserve down to Senior grades play 4 x 10 minute quarter games. Check out the club websites or facebook pages listed below.  We suggest you contact the club and don’t be afraid to ask questions about coaches, trainings, fitness opportunities and club activities on offer etc. It is important to find a club where you will feel comfortable and can play at the level that will help you develop your play. If you are attending college it is recommended to play for your own college team in the first instance.  Dispensation must be sought from your college if wishing to play for a club - a Dispensation Form can be downloaded from our website or email games@netballwellington.co.nz
to request.  College teams play within our Premier to Premier Reserve grades and then filter through into our Collegiate 1A to 5B grades followed by our Junior Collegiate 1A to 2C grades for Year 9 & 10 teams.

And you want to play for fun and exercise you should look for a club which offers teams in senior grades and please remember that when you are joining a club you are making a commitment to be part of a team for the whole season. Contact the club and don’t be afraid to ask questions about grades, trainings and club activities etc. The club may require you to attend trials. Don’t be put off as it is a good way to get a feel for how the club operates and to work out if it is what you are looking for not to mention meet new people. If you want to play in a more social grade make it clear from the start so that the club can place you in the right team. It is important to find a club where you will feel comfortable and where you can play at the level which you will enjoy participating.

And you want to play with a group of friends you could approach a club and ask to enter a team under their umbrella. You will have to pay their fees and will be subject to any rules they have in place. We do have “member teams” which are teams playing as single team clubs. If you want to set this up you need to talk to us. The cost is stated in our NWC Rules (PDF can be accessed here - bear in mind rules are reviewed annually therefore latest rules will apply once released) and involves a one-off affiliation fee as well as an annual registration fee per team for the season.  Fees cover a maximum of 12 players however additional players can be registered for an additional fee otherwise you can register and deregister players to maintain no more than 12 players with clever team management. Remember you will also need to decide upon a playing uniform, purchase and order them in time for the start of the season (if necessary) and ensure it is registered with our Centre. Please check with Netball Wellington Centre before ordering as uniform registrations need to be approved by the Centre.  This helps ensure uniforms remain unique and do not too closely resemble others already in circulation. Uniform Registration forms can be downloaded from our website or email games@netballwellington.co.nz

If you are new to Wellington….check out the club websites or facebook pages below or contact clubs directly to find out about trial dates and gain a feel for what each club has to offer.  Also read through the information above as it all applies to all new players.

If you are a current representative player transferring from another region... please contact us directly so that we can perhaps add you to our Emerging Talent player database and keep you in touch with player development opportunities and representative trial dates for your age group.  Get in touch by email to our Netball Development Officer - ndo@netballwellington.co.nz

If you are a male keen to continue playing... we'd like to hear from you.  We started our first Men's League in 2015 and would like to get it back up and running with sufficient support and also hope to introduce Boys Netball for Year 9-13. Email games@netballwellington.co.nz to be added to our mailing list.  There is also the opportunity to play mixed Twilight with games played on Wednesdays or Thursdays at the ASB Sports Centre throughout the year or at the Hataitai netball courts on Mondays in Terms 1 and 4.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
