SAWFL announces the Mulvihill Medal
The SAWFL is thrilled to announce that the Division 2 Best & Fairest Player Medal will be named after long serving member of the League, Catherine Mulvihill!
Catherine joined the South Australian Women’s Football League (SAWFL) in its inaugural year in 1991, playing for Edwardstown Women’s Football Club.
Over the past two decades this club went onto be named Eagles Women’s Football Club, and is now the West Adelaide Women’s Football Club. It has achieved 13 premierships, 12 of which Catherine has competed in. The club’s premiership win in 2005 was a special one for Catherine as she was awarded the SAWFL Grand Final Best on Ground medal.
Catherine has been heavily involved in the club’s successes, representing them in the roles of Vice-President and SAWFL Players’ Representative for a number of years. The club also presents a Catherine Mulvihill Award for Excellence to one of their players each year.
Catherine is well respected amongst the SAWFL community and this was acknowledged in 2001 when she was awarded the SAWFL Carmel Laube Medal for the Players’ Player, the most respected player in the League.
Catherine has long represented South Australian State Team and one of her highlights over the years was being selected as a Co-Captain. Her achievements in women’s football were recognised by the League in 2009 when she was awarded Life Membership of the SAWFL.
Catherine embraces all the qualities that are admirable in a football player and since the SAWFL introduced a second division to its Open Women’s competition in 2014, the League has had its eye on Catherine as a candidate for the title of the Division 2 Best & Fairest Medal.
Catherine is now preparing to play her 300th SAWFL game for West Adelaide on Saturday 26th July. She will be the first player in the SAWFL and the second player nationally to reach this incredible milestone.
This is a remarkable achievement and the League is thrilled to announce that the SAWFL Division 2 Best & Fairest Medal will be named the Mulvihill Medal. The inaugural Mulvihill Medal will be presented at the 2014 SAWFL Presentation Night on Saturday 6 September at the Oval Rooms on Brougham.
The SAWFL would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Catherine and wish her all the best for her 300th game. You can show your support for Catherine by heading down to City Madza Stadium on Saturday 26th July to watch West Adelaide take on Ingle Farm from 6:00pm!
