THE GOOD
The Blues achieved their goal heading into this season, going one step further than last year and winning the Championship. Expertly coached by Troy Sachs, they were the best team through the regular season with just two losses and extended their nine-game winning streak with a sweep of the playoffs against state rivals, Sydney Uni. Giving up 43.4 points per game in 2017, the Blues tightened that up to an average of just 38 across the Semi and Grand Final as they gave the Flames no chance of an upset. Import Courtney Ryan (14 points per game at 53% shooting) proved an inspiring addition while Cobi Crispin, Bridie Kean and Jess Cronje were all impactful in every area of the court. Eight members of the side also played all 17 games which proved significant in their run to the title.
THE BAD
There is not much to complain about in a Championship season but the Blues did fall to the Flames twice early in the season as their brilliant defence became leaky, allowing 57 and 73 points respectively. It did not take long for them to right the ship though and cruise into the playoffs on top of the ladder.
STANDOUT PERFORMER
The lone member from the Blues in the All-Star Five, Georgia Munro-Cook was rewarded with her first nomination this season. She collected five double-doubles for the year and came within three rebounds or assists of a triple-double a further four times. Leading the club for scoring, finishing third for boards and second for assists, Munro-Cook was outstanding in the Semi-Final against the Flames when she recorded 14 points, 12 rebounds and two assists.
Next Year
Coming into 2017, Sydney Metro knew they were close to something special and hardly altered their roster which included retaining their top four scorers. They will be looking to do the same and create a dynasty with this team but if import Ryan does not return, they will be looking for somebody similar to take her place at the offensive end and keep the scoreboard ticking over.
