The Sydney University Flames have raced to a healthy lead on top of the ladder after Round 2 following a successful sweep of their four games this weekend.

After they lost just one game in Round 1, the Flames enjoyed a perfect Round 2 with four straight victories to take an eight-point advantage on top of the table.

Winning by an average margin of 33.5 points, no team truly concerned Sydney Uni as they did not lose a quarter in any game with Sarah Stewart (14.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 11.5 assists per game) and Annabelle Lindsay (17.5 points, 12 rebounds, four assists) leading the way.

Stewart tallied another triple-double in their clash against the Kilsyth Cobras and came close against the Sydney Metro Blues with 15 points, nine boards and eight assists while Lindsay dominated the glass with two double-doubles including a 22-point, 22-rebound performance against the Blues.

While Sydney Metro fell to their inter-state rivals, they were successful in their clashes against the Red Dust Heelers and Cobras to move clear in second place on the ladder.

They defeated the Heelers as five players hit double-figures in scoring, led by Cobi Crispin who had a triple-double off the bench with 12 points, 12 boards and ten assists.

Kilsyth made them work hard for the win though, threatening a comeback after trailing by 15 points at quarter-time as they cut the margin to five early in the final term before eventually falling 49-57.

Georgia Munro-Cook (25 points) top-scored in that match for the Blues while Bridie Kean (18 points, 13 rebounds, 17 assists) and Crispin (eight points, 11 boards, 11 assists) were ultimately unstoppable.

The Cobras were successful in their final two games of the weekend, putting an end to a losing streak with a 54-42 win over the short-handed Heelers and 55-26 defeat of the Queensland Comets.

Red Dust put up a strong fight but could not stop Leanne Del Toso who averaged 18.8 points per contest over the weekend while Shelley Chaplin (9.3 points) and Teisha Shadwell (7.8 points) also impressed.

Thanks to a win on Friday night, the Heelers stayed above Kilsyth on the ladder though with a 2-6 record.

Their defence proved too strong for the Comets, holding them to just 24 points and while they played with just a roster of six for the round, Kathleen O’Kelly-Kennedy (18.5 points, 13 rebounds per game) and Georgia Inglis (nine points, 3.5 steals) starred.

In their first round of the season after enjoying the bye last fortnight, the Comets were unable to record a win with an average of just 23 points per contest.

They will need to find some potent scorers as the season progresses if they want to make a charge but the likes of Ashley Wardman and Melanie Hall showed promising signs.
