2017 AWARDS WINNERS

Capping off their impressive playoffs series that culminated in the Championship, Sydney Metro Blues’ Cobi Crispin has been named the 2017 Finals MVP.

Having scored 20+ only three times during the regular season, Crispin averaged 23.5 points on 47% shooting with 14 rebounds and six assists through their two finals.

That included the Semi-Final when she came off the bench but her impact was felt at both ends of the floor, collecting four steals as well.

While the Sydney University Flames fell in the Grand Final to the Blues, their impressive season was rewarded with Sarah Stewart and Hannah Dodd earning the 3.0 and 2.0 MVP’s respectively.

Stewart came close to averaging a triple-double for the season with 12.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and eight assists (second in the league) per game while the award was her fourth from the past five years.

Dodd had her most productive season offensively with 10.7 points per game while 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists also proved vital to the Flames this year as she claimed her first 2.0 MVP award.

The 2017 bronze medallists, Be Active Western Stars, also had two players feature in the end of season awards with Amber Merritt taking out the 4.0 MVP while Sarah Vinci was named the 1.0 MVP.

Extending her award streak to seven dating back to 2011, Merritt was also the league’s Top Scorer for the seventh consecutive season with 29.8 points per game.

She also finished fifth for rebounds (11 per game) and tallied 12 double-doubles for the year while hitting more free-throws than any other player with 33.

Scoring over 30 points in ten games for the year including a 36-point performance in the bronze medal, Merritt’s best output was an incredible 56-point effort against Kilsyth.

Vinci continues to be an integral member of the Stars, earning her second consecutive MVP award after recording 6.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists for 2017.

She scored in double-figures in their season opener and went on to reach that mark four more times while playing the full 40 minutes of each of the Stars’ last four games.

Joining those four MVP’s in the All-Star Five, Georgia Munro-Cook from the Blues was also rewarded for a stellar season.

Collecting five double-doubles for the year and coming within three rebounds or assists of a triple-double a further four times, Munro-Cook led Sydney Metro for scoring, finished third for boards and second for assists.

It is her first nomination in the All-Star Five alongside fellow debutant Dodd while Stewart was named for a ninth time, Merritt for a seventh time and Vinci for a third consecutive time.

Rounding out the award winners, Teisha Shadwell of the Kilsyth Cobras took out the Best New Talent for Australians players in their first season, averaging 9.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.

Making a statement in her debut against the Flames when she tallied 12 points, Shadwell went on to record a double-double against the Blues while in her second last game of the year, she recorded 15 points and 16 rebounds vs. Queensland Comets.
