ROUND 1 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Leading the way for the Be Active Western Stars as they kicked off their 2016 campaign with four consecutive wins, Amber Merritt is the Round 1 Player of the Week.

Pacing the competition, the forward averaged 31.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists while shooting at a highly impressive 71% in a complete performance over the weekend.

Thrashing the defending Champions on Friday night by doubling their score, Merritt collected 35 points on 17-22 shooting to out-score the entire Kilsyth team by four points.

She was just as damaging the following day against the Sydney University Flames, with her 29 points matching the Flames’ total as the Stars won by 45.

Merritt added eight rebounds and four assists while at the defensive end, she recorded two steals and a block.

Backing up just four hours later against the Sydney Metro Blues, the Stars fought off a fast-finishing opposition to secure a 70-53 victory.

Merritt defied fatigue to play every minute of the contest, going close to a triple-double with 31 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, six steals and three blocks to balance eight turnovers as the captain had her hand in every play.

Capping off a spectacular weekend on Sunday, the Stars again breezed past their opponents, this time taking care of the Minecraft Queensland Comets, 74-38.

Merritt was all over the glass in this clash, tallying 20 rebounds (five offensive) with four assists and six steals while she shot 58% for another game-high 29 points.

Those five offensive boards led to eight points for herself as Merritt proved a damaging force both inside and outside the paint.

With a bye in the WNWBL this weekend due to the NWBL finals, Merritt will represent the Perth Wheelcats as they chase the title.
