Football rounds the final bend this week, representative season all but over, just the State Under 15 and Under 17 champs left, and the finals light at the end of the tunnel burning brightly. This week Mid West is playing MAC Road Safety Round, recognising safety on our roads, particularly important in our area given the distances that we travel!
West Coast Hawks v Wudinna United at Streaky Bay
Two sides with seasons so different, the confident Hawks undefeated and surmounting all challenges, and the Magpies struggling with one win only. Hard old road trip to the bay area for the Magpies this week.
The Hawks were challenged last match against the Tigers, eight point win in the end, but opportunities in front of goal missed, causing stress in the ranks! The constant however is that the Hawks win the ball and work it forward so regularly that thirty to forty scoring shots is the norm each week. Dylan Kelsh, Jake Mc Evoy back from State Championships, both performing well, EP squad member Cam Montgomerie, the Hawks are star studded. The return of Dillon Cabot will provide a huge boost as the finals approach. Strong backline Derick Freeman, Kirk Montgomeroe, Tyson Montgomerie just so mean, Nick Schumann’s enthusiasm across centre, Aiden Whitford is a machine, able to play anywhere. Ryan Hicks has settled into the Hawks style and another great utility. Young stars Harmyn Baldoock, Jonti Brice amongst those who will guide the Hawks to a successful future.
Wudinna United numbers are challenged somewhat, injury concerns, unavailability and lost youth to Adelaide and beyond making life difficult for a proud club. Mark North and Henry Zwar both excelling despite their advancing years, youngsters Tom Dupree and Adam Jericho enjoying big seasons. Remi North is a beacon in the middle, strong and sensible with the footy. Matt Greatbatch and Neil Seaman seasoned campaigners undertaking a mountain of work. Look out for youngsters Darcy Martin, Riley Martin and Brad Lymn early in very promising careers, with Ryan Lymn back from an overseas cricket sorty a valuable inclusion.
So hard to go past a strong Hawks outfit at home, albeit without gun centre Mark Dolling, but the club depth is just so strong. Will the Maggies be able to generate a reasonable amount of scoring opportunities? Yep, a hard old road trip this one,
Hawks 80 -90
