Kinlough Cup Summary – Darren Kelly
Eastern Eyre 10-9 def Mid West 0-2
Game one between Eastern Eyre and Mid West opened at a cracking pace at the picturesque Karkoo Oval with players from both sides taking time to settle down.
A light breeze welcomed players onto the ground and favoured the clubrooms end all day.
It was Mid West who continually pushed the ball forward but Eastern Eyre were up for the challenge and defended well.
Eastern Eyre's Bailey Francis down back was turning the ball away numerous times with the help of his team-mates.
The second half was all Eastern Eyre; they had numerous goal kickers and ran riot in the second half to record a easy victory.
Best: EE: Jake Turner, Bailey Francis, Jaylynn McCallum; MW: Zak Lovegrove-Mackenzie Best-Harry Scholz.
Far West 1-4 lost to Lincoln City 9-8
Game two once again thrilled the crowd and was tight for the first 10 minutes until players from Far West and Lincoln City settled.
The speedster Lenard Wells had the ball on a string and along with his team-mate Jake Horton they dominated.
Lenard Wells' pressure around the ball was first class.
Easy missed shots on goal from Lincoln City could have had this margin bigger.
Far West never stopped trying all day and they managed a clever goal out of the pocket to give their fans something to cheers about.
Lincoln City played better team footy and looked like a well-drilled team.
Best: LC: Jake Horton, Lenard Wells, Billy Haebich; FW: Baylyn Thompson, Maliki O'Loughlin, Dion Paves.
Great Flinders 6-5 def Lincoln Districts 5-4
This was a excellent game of footy and Lincoln Districts could count themselves unlucky not to win this game.
Great Flinders got away to the perfect start with Brodie Laube snapping a great goal out of the pack.
Great Flinders dominated the middle with Jack McDonald winning the rucks and Jayden Gale and Jagga Cross pushing the ball forward numerous times to have Lincoln Districts' backline under pressure.
The second half was Lincoln Districts' twins Joshua and Thomas Bradford's game.
They danced around Great Flinders' players to kick some unbelievable goals from all angles.
District nearly stole the game but when Great Flinders' Charlie Richardson snapped a goal out of the pack they had done enough to hold onto the game.
Best: GF: Jayden Gale, Jagga Cross, Brodie Laube; LD: Will Charlton, Thomas Bradford, Gil Casanova.
Eastern Eyre 7-6 def Lincoln Districts 5-4
This game for me was the match of the carnival.
It was goal for goal as both teams knew they had to win and win big to make the final.
Lincoln Districts started like a house on fire as they kicked goals from all over the 50 metre arc, even some near impossible snaps from Eastern Eyre and likewise from Lincoln Districts' Thomas Bradford who I gave goal of the carnival after winning his own ball and getting around players to bounce through a classy goal, very clever.
Eastern Eyre had a match-winner in Jake Turner who dominated the middle.
Up forward it was the Regan Taheny show.
He marked everything and if not for a couple of missed shots on goal Eastern Eyre could have won this easily.
Best: EE: Jake Turner, Regan Taheny, Cooper Llewelyn; LD: Thomas Bradford, Gil Casanova, Kyan Watherson.
Great Flinders 6-4 def Lincoln City 3-7
This game was close early but when Great Flinders woke up and started to play footy on their terms they dominated the second half.
Goals to Riley Doolan and forward livewire Charlie Richardson helped them take the game away from Lincoln City.
James Richardson at full forward had threatened to grab the game but Lincoln City defended well with players having him under pressure all day.
The tackling and pressure in this game was a real highlight as both teams hit in hard.
This was no more evident as when play was held up from a injured player being stretchered from the oval.
Great Flinders' chain of attacking handballs worked out well for them as Tom Crettenden got on the end of some great team play.
Lenard Wells was showing everyone a clean set of heels as his speed and delivery was a real feature of this game, going forward to Sam Clark.
Best: GF: Ethan Langley, Jayden Gale, Kobe Vlassco; LC: Lenard Wells, Camden Madden, Zac Mullins.
Mid West 3-5 lost to Far West 9-9
Far West turned it on in this game to run out comfortable winners but a plucky Mid West never went away and if not for missed shots on goal the margin would have been closer.
Mid West full forward Jordan Little presented all day and if they had used him the scores might have been closer.
Far West had many good players, none better than Harlee Chandler and his team-mate in Ty Mullan, and when Baylyn Thompson got up and busy in the forward lines it was game over for the Mid West lads.
Rory Kelsh tried hard all day and McKenzie Best and Zak Lovegrove had important touches.
Best: FW: Ty Mullan, Dion Paves, Baylyn Thompson; MW: McKenzie Best, Jordan Little, Zak Lovegrove.
GRAND FINAL
Great Flinders 14-9 def Eastern Eyre 1-4
The breeze had dropped away in time for the grand final, which made scoring at both ends achievable.
The footy was hot early as Eastern Eyre did all the attacking and Max Ramsey got them away to the perfect start.
Unfortunately for Eastern Eyre it was all Great Flinders after that as James Richardson exploded onto the scene and ended up kicking four goals.
Brodie Laube, who kicked three himself, also dominated the forward lines and when midfielders Jagger Cross and Riley Doolan slotted through a couple more it was game over for Eastern Eyre.
Eastern Eyre never stopped trying but Great Flinders played the perfect grand final game, a true team game as the backlines continually stopped and shut down any forward movement from Eastern Eyre.
Ethan Langley was brilliant along with Tom McDonald and the speedster Macca Glover.
They found space on the wing and ran away from their opponents with ease.
Tom Crettenden was marking everything across half forward as Charlie Richardson played the perfect rover.
Time and time again he pushed the ball forward and the delivery to James Richardson was unstoppable.
Great Flinders was simply to good all over the ground.
The old cliché 'best player was the whole team' is exactly what Great Flinders dished up to Eastern Eyre.
Congratulations to Great Flinders on winning the 2019 Kinlough Cup, which they have not won since 2008.
Best: GF: Macca Glover, Jayden Gale, Brodie Laube, James Richardson; EE: Jake Turner, Jake Bammann, Lenny McDonough, Cooper Llewelyn.
