A meeting was held at Poochera to look at the new rules being implemented for 2019 and also a revision of several current interpretations. Clubs were presented rules at the League meeting of 25 March 2019 and voted to implement rules in alignment with other Leagues.
Anyone interested in taking up umpiring is urged to contact our Umpiring Director - Wade Shepperd. It is a great way to stay fit and enjoy our great game from the best view of all!
SANFL Community is seeking that all leagues adopt new rules and interpretations. Greater detail is provided in a separate news item.
A summary of the changes are:
1. Traditional starting positions to be enforced at centre bounces (6 forwards and six backs, each inside 50m arcs, 6 centreline players);
2. Kick in from behinds scored. Player on mark to be set at 10m and player no longer needs to kick to himself to play on. Play on will be called when he leaves the goal square;
3. Defensive players marking or receiving free kicks in goal square, the player on mark will be brought out nine metres from goal (end of goal square) and centred, defensive players marking/receiving free kicks in the defensive protected zone, player on the mark will be set at a point level with the end of the goal square (9m)
4. Runners and Water Carriers will still be allowed on ground during play (not allowed in AFL in 2019);
5. 50m Penalties. Player receiving the 50 penalty may play on anytime without being impeded by the defensive player (applies for 25m penalties also);
6. Umpires contact is prohibited and players setting up behind umpire for blocking will be penalised;
7. Kicking for goal after the siren. Players may now kick accross their body after the siren so long as they dont narrow the angle to goals (think the Stevie J snap!);
8. Players may hold their position with hands in the back, but must not have a forward movement. This is a lightening of the push in the back rules back to what it was a few years ago;
9. Ruckmen who takes the ball in the ruck will not be deemed to have had prior opportunity, and will be treated the same way as any other possession around the ground. (Back to original rules interpretation of a few years back);
Variations on Current Rules in Mid West to align with other Leagues:
a) Ruck contests will be two players only (no third man up). Nomination of rucks will be called where it is unclear who is contesting;
b) 25m penalties will be applied for minor infringements, such as mark infringement, protected zone transgression, minor time wasting. 50m applies for more major issues;
c) Last possession out of bounds will apply (rules has been in SANFL). If the ball goes out of bounds from a kick or handball, a penalty free will apply. (does not need to be out on the full).
