This weekend the SBL & WABL are promoting awareness of Mental Health. The most recent ABS National Health Survey (February 2019) estimated there were 4.8 million Australians (20.1 per cent) with a mental or behavioural condition in 2017–18. Many things can impact someone’s mental health; community, life experience & culture can all play a part. While for many people it can be a physiological disorder causing an imbalance in the brain. Mental Health awareness is a journey that starts where we live, learn, work & play.
“Stronger Together” is a term we use throughout the Redback’s community. Think of that not only from a performance perspective, but also in personal & mental health. We can be ‘stronger together’ by not judging or condemning, but showing compassion & grace. The struggle is real & we need to let each other know we have nothing to hide or to be ashamed of, we are not alone.
If you are struggling, find someone who you respect & trust to talk to & don’t be afraid to open up. There is also great professional help available; you can talk to your GP or go to your local hospital.
In my role at Wisdom Calling, my main focus within the Redbacks Basketball Club & throughout Perth, is to be available for anyone who needs someone to talk to. To be a safe, non-threatening,non-judgemental person to off-load & share your burdens with.
