Apart from what the scoreboard reads; the final game for the Terry Anderson Shield was a hotly contested encounter with lhe standard of play quite impressive from both teams. With diving marks, 60 metres kicks, massive sidestepping and courageous pack marks this game had it all and showed off the development of these two clubs for the last round robin game of season 2016.
For the Doggies Burdett, Marks and Smith made it very difficult for the Cougars to convert all the hard work through the midfield. The big difference was the Bulldogs knew how to finish with Stevo seemingly having the ball on a string and taking his time to line up his numerous goals and combining well with the untouchable Sully whose deft touches set team mates up in scoring positions. Foley had the game of his life out on the wing running the ball from deep, setting up the forwards and even converting a hat trick of his own. Exeter’s ruck work found Thomson consistently whose accurate kicking allowed the attack to open up whilst the hardest working award goes to Mavor with strong marking and long running around the ground.
For the Cougars Reyne Westbury strong marking in pack situations was always impressive and a sure fire way to clear the backline. Hook positioned himself well and found the ball easily off half back. Devereux was wearing a free kick magnet attracting the whistle every time he was near the ball. Edy brothers might just become the Krakouer brothers combining well around the ground. One of the highlights of the game was a Cougar’s diving mark 4 feet off the ground (sorry didn’t catch the name).
The win seals the Minor Premiership for the Bulldogs with an impressive season of 7 wins 1 draw and they’ve earnt the direct route to the Grand Final whilst the Cougars get to fight for a place in the granny but need to put away the Eagles in next week’s Semi Final.
