Upcoming Grants and Training Opportunities

Some significant grants via Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS), national programs by Basketball Australia and general training and capacity building will support our collective ability to manage our core and peripheral members/participants.

Here's a run-down and brief of programs that could either be submitted by your organisation, Basketball SA, or local council.  The strongest applications will have as many on board as possible - adding another sport further strengthens the application:

From ORS:

Sporting Surfaces - opening 7 February 2018, closing 11 April 2018 - (http://ors.sa.gov.au/funding/apply_for_funding/sporting_surfaces_program

  • Specifically for the surface ONLY.  Think about your home stadiums and training venues.  Maybe there's a school or council facility you hire that could use an upgrade of their playing surface.  Let me know ASAP and we'll make sure, together, that all the paperwork/quotes/letters of support/etc are completed properly and on time.
  • Request can be for 100% of project total, but, of course, the more stakeholders contribute, the better
  • Up to $1M per application with a $10M total purse - for some context 1 court = ~$60 - 80K
  • This can be for new or existing surfaces

Facility Upgrades - opening 7 February 2018, closing 11 April 2018 - (http://ors.sa.gov.au/funding/apply_for_funding/community_recreation_and_sport_facilities_program)

  • This is for the building and it's a 50/50 grant (ORS will provide up to 50% of total project costs)
  • Minor ($25 - 200K) and major ($200K - $1M) requests accepted'
  • Anything from minor modifications to major upgrades including solar paneling, evap air conditioning w/ water tanks and innovative technologies (like indoor GPS, video capturing software, etc.)
  • For context, a 2 court shed (ie, Hillcrest/Marion) has ~$1.5M value, at the least (not counting carpark and surrounding land) - so, most likely, we're talking about work to an existing building

Active Club - opening 7 February 2018, closing 11 April 2018 - (http://ors.sa.gov.au/funding/apply_for_funding/active_club_program)

  • Program and equipment (up to $5,000)
  • Facility upgrade requests (up to $25,000)
  • Keep it simple.  Present a 'problem' and propose a 'solution' - add a dollar value and get stakeholder support.  I've noticed over the years this particular program is a straight shot.  I have suggested to a couple of you that getting mobile rings (see MSF Sports) could be of real value when activating on a school ground or car park in your area.  Minor facility projects like storage rooms/sheds that solve an OHS issue also seem to tick a lot of boxes.

NATIONAL PROGRAMS

Sporting Schools - term-by-term grants given directly to schools

  • You influence where those funds get diverted depending on relationships you have with schools in your area.  You obviously don't want to offer a bunch of free clinics in lieu of Sporting Schools
  • There's a bit of a process, so just a bit of open, quick comms will get you sorted.
  • Think ~$1,500 per school per term --- adds up, especially for imports and casual staff

Member Protection & Child Safe Officer Training - on Wednesday, 7 March 2018, 530pm - 10pm at Titanium Security Arena we're getting Basketball SA stadium staff and club administrators TOGETHER to go through this training.  BSA staff will receive Member Protection training and Club Administrators will receive Child Safe Officer training.  Both will produce a certificate which we hope to achieve 100% uptake within the next 12 months.  BSA has defined our prescribed persons  in the stadiums and each club/association would need to have at least one Child Safe Officer, however, you probably have a lot more than that.  The legislation has a lengthy list of those prescribed persons in club land - an abbreviated description can be found here: https://sites.google.com/basketballsa.com.au/childsafe/for-all

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
