Stibners-Russell Combo Is Back

In previous season’s the ability for every player on the floor to contribute to the scoreboard has been Wollongong’s strength and the NWBL’s round 2 cluster was no different, with no less than three players scoring in double figures every single day.

Interesting, the Rollerhawk’s biggest win over the weekend was against their highest ranked opponents the RSL QLD Spinning Bullets. Wollongong got the 36 point win thanks to the twin towers Brett Stibners (34 points) and Shawn Russell (27 points) but found it tougher going against the league’s biggest improvers Adelaide(27 point win) and Victoria (20 point win).

Great news for the longevity of the club is the fact that guys like Brad Fisher and Tim Markcrow are starting to see more minutes on the floor. While neither is presently playing huge minutes the Rollerhawks seem to have the confidence in these two you guys to come off the bench and fulfil a roll.

Luke Pople proved all weekend that he cannot go unchecked, shotting a perfect 10-10 on Friday night and 7-11 on Sunday for a 66% total shooting percentage for the weekend. Luke will play a major part in the Rollerhawks chances in 2013 as well as the Australian Spinners at the U23 World Championships in Adana, Turkey later this year.

It’s been mentioned in previous articles about the Rollerhawks but Brett Stibners proved again over the weekend that retirement has barely even been a blip on his ability to perform consistently on court. Stibners sits second in the leagues in points per game and rebounds per game averaging a double-double five games into the 2013 season.

The Rollerhawks sit in a tie for second place at the moment but have already completed two out of their three road trips for the year. They’re back home this weekend hosting the Adelaide Thunder and expect a boisterous home crowd to return them to the Wollongong of old as they cement themselves into a top two position and poise themselves for a run at the 2013 Championship.
