Rollerhawks go back to back

In front of a capacity crowd, the Wollongong Rollerhawks have won back to back NWBL championships for the first time in their clubs history after beating the Be Active Perth Wheelcats 79-59 in this afternoon’s final.

The score line is not indicative as to how close the game was with the teams trading baskets early and the Rollerhawks taking a narrow four point lead into the first change.

The second was as tight as the first with the Rollerhawks looking like leading by six at the half before a Luke Pople bomb from just inside halfway at the buzzer gifted the Rollerhawks a nine point buffer at the half.

The Wheelcats continued to battle and got off more shots than the Rollerhawks but couldn’t get them to drop while the Rollerhawks offense continued to tick over. Shawn Russel was dominated inside while Brett Stibners continued to hurt the Wheelcats from outside.

In the end the Wheelcats just didn’t have any answers for the Russell-Stibners combination. Brett Stibners kept the score table busy finishing with a triple-double (29 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists). Team mate Shawn Russell had a double-double (27 points and 15 rebounds) while Perth Captain Shaun Norris added 25 points to go along with his 11 rebounds and 7 assists.

Stibners capped a stellar weekend by taking out the league’s high point MVP, finals MVP and overall MVP. He was joined in the allstar-5 by: Jannik Blair (Victoria Dandenong Rangers), Shaun Norris (Be Active Perth Wheelcats), Tige Simmons (RSL QLD Spinning Bullets) and Adam Deans (Be Active Perth Wheelcats)

The win has established the Rollerhawks as the dominant team in the NWBL and will again be the team to beat in 2013.
