MEDIA RELEASE - NWBL Finals To Be Televised

The 2011 National Wheelchair Basketball League is coming to a heated finals event next weekend with 4 teams playing off for the NWBL Championship Title. The NWBL Finals will be held at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre in Brisbane from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th September.

For the first time, the 2011 NWBL Finals will be filmed and televised on Aurora Community Channel. Fans will be able to see highlights from the Bronze playoffs and the Championship Title Finals game in detailed action. It will be a 90 minute programme, airing from September through to November and will include additional coverage in December for International Day of People With Disability.

“It is an exciting time for the National Wheelchair Basketball League. This is the first time that the Championship Finals will be televised. It’s fantastic that the world’s most popular disability sport can be viewed by everyone.” Said Gillian Ting, Executive Officer of Wheelchair Sports Australia.

“Just like able-bodied basketball, the wheelchair league is fast paced, action packed and the athlete’s speed and manoeuvrability with their wheelchair is incredible. Having televised coverage is important for any of our nation’s league competitions and this will help build the future of an already popular sport.”

The broadcast is made possible by the following organisations; Basketball Australia, Australian Athletes With a Disability, Aurora Community Channel and Gondwana Productions.

The initial playoffs will have The Be Active Perth Wheelcats against Wollongong Roller Hawks and the RSL Queensland Spinning Bullets competing against the Sydney Uni Wheelkings. Sunday will be a day of action as the teams will fight for the 3rd place Bronze medal (Sunday 18th 11am) and the main event will be Sunday 1pm, where the two winning teams will battle it out for the title of 2011 NWBL Champions.
