Wheelkings Feeling The Impact Of Missing Players

The Sydney Uni Wheelkings will be disappointed with their results from the weekend and in particular their final performance against Victoria.

Having split their earlier series, one game apiece, a win against the Victorians would have given them the upper hand in securing that final play-off spot.

They started the weekend so well, jumping hosts QLD in a nail biter on Friday night, leading at ¾ time only to fall by six points. They squeaked home against the Thunder by four points thanks to a stellar performance from Josh Meoli before going down to Victoria by 28 points the following day in a game where 0/11 from the free throw line and just 14 points from inside the paint probably told the story.

With so many players away with the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup, first year player Max Illingworth was well and truly thrown into the deep end, forced to play full minutes in every game as the team’s only low pointer. He’ll be better off for the experience and will have to back up this weekend for a double header against league leaders the Be Active Perth Wheelcats.

To make the playoffs from here, the equation for the Wheelkings for the remainder of the season is simple: Win Games. They have double headers against Adelaide and Brisbane later this year and they can hardly afford to drop any of those games.

The Wheelkings season is far from over. They are currently locked in a tie for fourth place with Victoria but have six of their final ten games against Perth and Wollongong.

The areas of improvement will have to come from the entire list. They are in need of some low point support but 9/30 from the free throw line over weekend would be a massive worry for Coach Gerry Hewson.
