Star performers:
Tom O’neill-Thorne is the standout in terms of who’s hitting the stats sheet for the Spinning Bullets with the 16 year old averaging 19 points per game. He will freely admit himself that training alone in Darwin affects his passing game, but that’s something that has significantly improved during the course of the season. Averaging just 3.2 assists per game during the first half of the season, he’s made a conscious effort to improve that area of his game and has increased his average to 6.75 in the second part of the 2013 season.
Another player that goes very much under the radar for QLD is Matthew McShane. Arguably the most improved player in the NWBL, the 22 year old offers the Spinning Bullets plenty at both ends of the floor. As a 2.0, his increased speed and intensity on defence has seen him play big minutes on 2013 and deservingly, cement himself a place in QLD’s starting five.
Report Card:
In 2013 QLD has taken another step toward living up to the hype that surrounds this developing list. With third place locked up and nothing to lose, they’ll view this weekend’s double header in Perth as another really good test.
They took a game away from Wollongong last weekend and were able control the first half against Perth in the Cluster Round. They are one of the youngest teams in the NWBL and will only get better. They have been without Rollers big man Bill Latham for all of 2013 and as strong as their list is, there are plenty of other quality developing players up in QLD that we haven’t even seen yet.
In a league that has been dominated by Wollongong and Perth for so long, it seems another genuine contender has arrived in 2013.
