2016 result – 5 wins, 10 losses 5th

THE GOOD

The Spinning Bullets did what they had to in the last round of the regular season, sweeping Adelaide to clinch a playoff position after winning five of their last six contents including a victory over Sydney Metro. They then proved they were not just making up the numbers with a huge victory in the bronze medal game against hosts Kilsyth as Tom O’Neill-Thorne scored 36 points while Matt McShane (eight points, eight rebounds, seven assists), Daniel Anstey (12 points, eight boards) and Kurt Thomson (eight points) contributed. In addition, the likes of Jake Fulwood and Steven Elliott continue to flourish as the Spinning Bullets now aim to move up on the podium next year.

THE BAD

While the Spinning Bullets got the better of the Blues twice in 2017, their record against Wollongong and Kilsyth was 0-6 in the regular season and to take the next step, they must be able to match it with those powerhouse teams consistently. Struggling at times around the basket, Queensland only owned the fifth-most effective offence in the league.

STANDOUT PERFORMER

Once again the club leader, O’Neill-Thorne earned the Mid-Point MVP in a tie with Perth’s Shaun Norris. That proves just how far O’Neill-Thorne has come in a whirlwind 12 months that also saw him represent the Australian Rollers at the Rio Paralympics. Finishing fifth in the league for scoring with 22.2 points per game, he maintained career averages of 9.1 rebounds and 6.8 assists to pace the Spinning Bullets in all three categories.

Next Year

Still a little predictable at times in their movement, Queensland will be aiming to move away from being reliant on O’Neill-Thorne and continuing the development of Elliott, Anstey and Fulwood. The Spinning Bullets are also developing a big squad in the paint which could come in handy as they look to match the likes of defending Champs Wollongong in 2018.
