ROUND 1 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Leading the Wollongong Roller Hawks to the only unbeaten record through Round 1, Brett Stibners has been named the Player of the Week.

After earning the honours in Round 7 of last season, Stibners started the 2017 campaign in fine form as he averaged 21 points, 8.7 rebounds and six assists in three straight wins while totalling just three turnovers.

He was inspriational in their opening night victory over Kilsyth Cobras, a game in which they trailed by 11 points at three-quarter time.

Wollongong looked switched on to start the final term but had only trimmed the margin by 1 after three and a half minutes.

Stibners turned the tide though on back-to-back three-pointers within 45 seconds before tying the game inside the final 2:30 on a lay-up.

That started a personal 6-0 run which gave the Roller Hawks their first lead of the game and he capped off a 14-point quarter with the final basket of the game to clinch the win over the defending Champs.

He out-scored Kilsyth by himself in that final term and his 26 points overall was a game-high to go with six rebounds and five assists.

The following day, Wollongong led Red Dust Heelers by 13 points at three-quarter time but survived a final quarter rally to win 52-47.

Stibners threatened a triple-double with 13 points, seven rebounds and eight assists which was a game-high and his one turnover helped control the tempo for his side as the Heelers finished the game with all the momentum.

He was also cool down the stretch as a three-point play inside the last 30 seconds made it a two-possession game and finally put the match beyond Red Dust's reach.

The next day, Wollongong clinched a sweep of Round 1 against the Adelaide Thunder, winning 66-24 and Stibners was dominant again with 24 points, 13 boards and five assists.

He shot at a 55% clip including another three-pointer while two steals helped the Roller Hawks to a 17-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Finishing the round sixth for points and fourth for assists per game and with Wollongong on top of the ladder, Stibners looks set for a big year as his club looks to improve on their bronze medal from last season.

Brett Stibners Round 1 Stats: 21 points on 25-49 (51%) shooting including 3-6 (50%) three-point shooting, 8.7 rebounds (1.3 offensive) and six assists per game.
