Wollongong has gone very much under the radar so far in 2013 but continues on their winning ways with back to back wins against the Adelaide Thunder.

Luke Pople sat out the first game, but a 30 point effort from Brett Stibners ensured the 69-43 victory. Pople returned on Sunday which just meant more headaches for the Thunder. He added 15 points but more importantly for the Rollerhawks they were able to blow the game out to an 89-48 win and consolidate second spot on the NWBL ladder.

Wollongong’s strength has always been their ability to spread the offence amongst the five players on the floor. This year is no different and Wollongong continues to win games without seeming to play their best basketball.

Apart from the two early season losses to Perth where they were missing three of their starting five, Wollongong hasn’t really been challenged this season. They have being doing enough to make sure they win games without really putting their foot down and destroying teams. Which leaves the Rollerhawks as a little bit of an unknown in 2013, despite entering this season largely unchanged from their 2011 and 2012 championship teams.

For Adelaide, their first win of the season isn’t far away. Luke Watkins scored at 20.5 points per game in the Wollongong series and continues to score points consistently regardless of the opposition. Scott Crowley controls Adelaide’s offence from the point and managed to hit the scoreboard over the weekend, as did Tony Wade who snuck under the radar to score 13 in game two, his highest for the season.

The Thunder have a tough series coming up when they host league leaders the Be Active Perth Wheelcats while Wollongong will next host an improved Victorian team who will be desperate to put some distance between themselves and fifth place.
