Gliders shocked by Canada

Coming into the game full of confidence following a stirring win over hosts Great Britain the night prior, the Gliders were shocked early as the Canadians came out of the blocks with a bang to lead at the first change 20-12.

This deficit jolted the Gliders into action as they began to regain control of the contest thanks largely to the efforts of Cobi Crispin and Clare Nott, seeing the Australians outscore their opponents 20-13 for the quarter and trail by just one point heading into the second half.

Crispin was again a key for the Gliders, finishing the night with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while youngster Amber Merritt provided scoring impact off the bench, dropping a team-high 16 points.

Defence dominated the second half, with the Gliders struggling to find a way to mount scoreboard pressure on the Canadians, managing just 18 points for the half.

This was not enough to better their opponents and results in the Gliders dropping their first game of the tournament.

The Gliders need not wait for a shot at redemption as they prepare to face The Netherlands at 6:15am AEST tomorrow morning.
