Vacancy: Chief Executive, FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015


New Zealand‘s hosting of the FIFA U-20 (men’s) World Cup in 2015 is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the sport of football in this country and needs talented people driving its success.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup is the second most important FIFA event after the senior World Cup and will be the largest and most important football tournament held in this region of the world.

With a worldwide television audience numbering in the hundreds of millions and high viewership in every corner of the globe including some of New Zealand’s traditional and emerging markets, the tournament offers a valuable chance for positive exposure, a fact already recognised by the strong local and central government support.

Between June and July 2015, 24 countries including New Zealand will play 52 matches at up to eight cities around the country, showcasing the top young professional players in the world.

The event will employ over 100 staff and mobilise up to 1,000 volunteers.  It will also involve relationships with a large number of international and domestic stakeholders.

New Zealand Football is establishing a standalone governance and management structure to oversee and deliver an outstanding event that excites a nation and leaves a legacy for football in New Zealand.

To this end, we are seeking applications from interested parties for the role of Chief Executive, FIFA U-20 Men’s World Cup 2015.

The key requirements for the role of Chief Executive are as follows:

Recent experience as a chief executive of a major international sporting event.

Demonstrated skills and experience in the following areas:


  • budget management and risk mitigation
  • staff and volunteer management
  • marketing, sponsorship and event management
  • negotiation
  • stakeholder management 
  • government relations
  • media management


The ideal candidate will have experience in reporting to a board and be comfortable working in a fast paced team environment, with competing priorities and numerous deadlines.
