REGISTRATION FORM FOR BENDIGO SPIRIT TRY-OUTS

The Bendigo Spirit is on the lookout for the next Kristi Harrower or Gabe Richards, and it could be you.

Tryouts for the first Bendigo Spirit Development Squad will begin in August, with one lucky player making this season’s WNBL roster.

Head Coach Simon Pritchard said the idea was aimed at identifying talented locals and giving them every opportunity possible.

“I want every player in the region to feel like they are part of The Spirit team and that they can get the necessary skill development without having to go to Melbourne,” he said.

“It is always more satisfying when the next great player is unearthed just around the corner, rather than somewhere else around the globe.

“We are aiming to find the next Kelly Wilson, Gabe Richards or Kristi Harrower.”

Pritchard said the squad structure would provide a clear pathway for all junior women basketballers.

“We want to open up The Spirit to young aspiring players throughout the whole of country Victoria,” he said.

“We want there to be a pathway from junior representative basketball, all the way to the WNBL –  via Bendigo.”

Tryouts for the squad will be held on August 8 at the Bendigo Stadium from 11am to 1pm.

“The first tryouts will establish the talent within the region and the players who are prepared to commit,” Pritchard said.

“We are looking for players who will be 16 next year as a minimum, right up to SEABL players who want to push themselves to the next level.

“We will be looking for between six and eight players, and may look for more for a second trial.”

The reward for effort will be well worth it.

“Some players will get individual training, others will have small group sessions, and one player will make this season’s WNBL squad of 12,” Pritchard said.

“This squad will allow players to also receive mentoring from our Opals and WNBA players, an opportunity that doesn’t come along that often.
