VENOM WOMEN HEAD TO BIG V CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION & SIGN NEW YOUTH COACH

In what has been a huge year for the Warrandyte Big V Women’s programs, winning both the Division 1 Championship and the Youth League 1 Championship in season 2013, the journey continues with exciting news on season 2014.

The Warrandyte Basketball Association is proud to announce that our Senior Women will be playing in the State Championship division of Big V from next season. Upon receiving the news yesterday the players, coaching staff and the club committee were ecstatic with this next opportunity to advance the senior women’s program at Warrandyte and are delighted to be able to share the news with the Warrandyte community.

Senior Women’s coach, Nicole Howard shared her thoughts on the promotion - “after many successful years in Division 1 with Justin Nelson at the helm, this next chapter is exciting for all involved. We have a young side with many Warrandyte juniors in our women’s team and many more progressing through our youth program."

"To be elevated to State Championship level presents an exciting challenge to our current senior players and an enhanced pathway for our Venom juniors. The players are ready and raring to go having stepped back into training this month. It seems the success of last season has spurred us all on and the lure of a new challenge has the players working hard to emulate the heights experienced at Division 1 and Youth League 1.”

To top off a highly successful week the Venm would also like to announce the appointment of Damian Clarke as the new Youth League Women’s coach. Damian fits perfectly with the Warrandyte program having demonstrated a history and desire to develop young players, which is the foundation of the youth programs at Warrandyte. All players must have played, or be playing, basketball within the Warrandyte program and this appealed greatly to Damian in applying for the position. Damian held the position last year as Assistant Coach under Trevor Lee of the Diamond Valley SYCM side. He has a great wealth of experience across both male and female programs having more recently been the Assistant Coach of the U20 Victoria Metropolitan Men’s side, and some years back the Assistant Coach of the WNBL Dandenong Rangers.

Damian in accepting the position said – “I am excited to get an opportunity to become involved with an organisation that looks after their junior program in providing a clear pathway to senior basketball. I am looking forward to working with the young and talented Warrandyte Big V female players.”

Damian hit the ground running, attending his first training session last night after being appointed Head Coach over the weekend.
