VOA Outreach At Rewasa Village, Ra

FASANOC's Voices of the Athletes Champions Programme was invited to be a Fiji National Sports Commission workshop in Rewasa Village in the province of Ra last month.

Team Fiji Football representatives Laisani Mataele, Kinisimere Ravai and Annette Nainima were chosen to represent FASANOC's Voices of the Athletes and advocated to more than 100 participants.

The athletes spoke on several social issues including Go Green, Anti-Doping, Non Communicable Diseases and HIV/AIDS.

The main aim of the workshop was to help in training community coaches and to equip them with the necessary information to help them.

"We had villagers from near and around Rewasa Village and they spent three days learning about all sorts of interesting things," said Kinisimere.

"One topic of interest was Anti-Doping"

Kinisimere said most of the villagers were surprised to learn that all sports that participate in Oceania, Regional or International competitions undergo anti-doping tests.

"Some did not even know that the current Fiji Sevens team had to go through anti-doping tests," she said.

Kinisimere said one participant happened to have a disability but was an active sportsman.

Jo from Rewasa Village has Down syndrome but does not let that stop him from participating in sports.

"I always take part in sports especially after coming back from the farm I usually play touch with the boys," he said.

"Learning about the social issues brought about by the FASANOC VOA Champions and the FNSC I think I can become a better coach than a player."

Jo said he was happy to be included in the workshop and hopes that there will be more workshops in the future.
