Tokelau National Games 2013
The Tokelau National Games took place on Nukunonu from the 14th to the 20th July.
More than 300 athletes took part from the three villages Fakaofo, Atafu and the hosts Nukunonu, with the same amount of supporters converged on Nukunonu for the Games.
5 sports took place over the week long competitions: Kilikiti, Rugby League and Netball including two newly introduced sports Table Tennis and Athletics. Samoa Netball Umpires Association and the Rugby League Samoa also assisted the games by having their umpires and referees to officiate the National games.
A department of Health initiative “Zumba competition” was an added highlight to the Games in promoting physical activity for the population. A national youth debate was also included in the program where Atafu and Nukunonu youth had an opportunity to debate current social issues pertaining to youth. A rugby sevens team was to be selected at these games for the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna, however due to just missing the registration deadline for the games Tokelau is not able to take part at the Mini Games.
A focus of development of sport officials on Tokelau led to three official’s courses for Netball, Rugby League and Table Tennis were held prior to the commencement of the games and contributed to the smooth operation of these. Development plans are now underway for official’s and coaching accreditations in the targeted sports starting from school teachers and into community development as a way to further improve Tokelau’s sport in the locally and regionally.
The Tokelau Sport Federation constitution put forward at the recent General Fono will be taken back to the villages for consultation and to be put back on General Fono agenda in its next sitting later this year.
