Wheelchair Fencing Program Now At Fioretto Fencing Club

Statement from Jack Musgrave - Fioretto Fencing Club
"I am very proud to announce that Fioretto Fencing Club is reviving its Wheelchair Fencing program. Between the recent Toyota ads and the Rio Paralympics, Australian television has seen more Wheelchair Fencing this year than ever before. Now it’s time to get out of the lounge room and try this amazing sport for yourself. With limited opportunities in this para-sport in our country for the past decade there is a new movement across Australia to make it available, which means this is an exciting time to get involved.

At Fioretto the wheelchair fencing frame has been dusted off and given a permanent position in the venue. Coaches are going back to and going over their wheelchair fencing knowledge and skills and preparing to train a new generation of novices. All that is left is getting people with recognised mobility issues to actually fence. We’re on the lookout for anyone interested; young or old, always wanted to swordfight or never heard of it until you turned on Channel 7, this is your chance to learn. If you’re a wheelchair user or have a physical impairment that limits your activity (examples include limb loss or cerebral palsy) then we want to hear from you! Or, if you know anyone that may be eligible and would be interested, please share this with them.

We are planning to run a beginners course towards the end of 2016. This will run as a 1 hour session, once a week, with all equipment supplied by the club. Sessions will run from 7pm to 8pm on a Tuesday night and will be led by Fioretto head coach, Brook Dunstan. The course will run over 8 weeks and all sessions will be run at Fioretto Fencing Club in Oakleigh.

Places in this initial specialised beginner’s course will be limited to 6 people. More courses will be run in 2017 to build upon this base of wheelchair fencers.

If you are interested in joining, have any questions about the sport or eligibility, or want to be added to our mailing list, please email:jackfmusgrave@gmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as I can."
