Rnd 5: Kirksey leads Warriors over Sabres

By Mark Halliday

Woodville Warriors 80 | Sturt Sabres 63

A composed Woodville Warriors defeated the Sturt Sabres with four players scoring in double digits as they won 80-63 at St Clair on Saturday night.

Nelson Kirksey, Darren Ng, Luke Stanbridge and Daniel McKee all put in solid contributions as the Warriors topped a Sturt team that began to unravel as the game entered the crucial closing stages of the game.

The Warriors held the lead for almost the entire game and were able to withstand a Sturt run late in the third quarter to dominate the fourth and cruise to victory. Stanbridge opened the fourth with a three point play then found a wide open Adam Miller on the break for two more and boasted a ten point lead with 7:35 left to play.

Jan Warbout, Sturt's most consistent player of the night, hit from mid-range to cut the lead to single digits but a third technical foul on the Sabres was a culmination of the frustration from that team. The Sabres weren't getting the calls they desired from the referees, leading to some forced shots and not holding it together towards the end of the game.

Kirksey, Ng, McKee and Miller all scored in the closing minutes to increase their lead and put the game out of reach as Sturt was unable to replicate their form in the second and third quarters.

The Sabres had outscored their opponents over the course of the second and third. Warbout was a constant danger from inside and mid-range, while Josiah Lee and Tim Klaosen continued to attack the basket.

Klaosen had a big impact out of half time. A dunk to start and multiple baskets later had Sturt challenging for the lead. Warbout's jumper with 4:55 left in the quarter had the Sabres trailing by three points.

A number of missed shots by Woodville allowed the Sabres to stay close until the fourth quarter where the Warriors put in their most impressive quarter of the game as they scored 26 points against Sturt's 15.

Kirksey had a fantastic game, scoring 28 points, grabbing 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. Ng hit three triples in his 18 points. Stanbridge had a 14 point, 13 rebounds double-double while McKee added 10 points, 5 rebounds.

Sturt in contrast, only had one player score double digits. Warbout had 16 points and 6 rebounds, Lee came close with 9 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Klaosen and Hamish Burns both scored 8 points, Klaosen added 6 rebounds and 6 assists to his total.
