Rnd 2: Centrals Men fall short to Sturt

By Jake Stoubos

Sturt Sabres 77 | Central Districts Lions 66

Sturt continue to shine, after defeating Central Districts by 11 on Friday.

With a strong start, Sturt displayed fast ball movement and solid teamwork which saw them score early 3 pointers and alley-oops to entertain the home crowd. It wasn’t long before Centrals fought back to lead in the first 23-21.

The second quarter started off relatively tight with both teams rallying back and forth, scoring bucket for bucket. Halfway through the second, Sturt’s Hamish Burns (22 pts, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals) was subbed on and instantly caught fire with numerous steals, buckets, 3 pointers and rebounds to allow the Sabres to regain their lead and it was 44-40 going into halftime.

The second half saw both teams apply strong defensive pressure, making it hard for each other to score. This kept the third quarter scoreless until a foul was made by Centrals’ Ramiah Simpson three minutes in leading to a couple of easy free throws by Tim Klaosen.

The game returned to its original aggressive style from here with several buckets and rebounds occurring by both teams right up until the closing minutes of the third.

The fourth began tight but halfway through Centrals gave up several fouls and allowed Sturt to take control of the match. The Sabres eventually jumped to a 10 point lead towards the final minutes and eventually closed it out 77-66.

Tim Klaosen had a strong game racking up 13 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, as did Max Calligeros with 10 points, 7 rebounds, while Hamish Burns was top scorer for the night with 22 points.

Daniel Carlin played best for the Central Districts Lions earning himself 15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, while Nathan Marsing was the only other Lion to score in double-digits with 15 points, 5 rebounds in total.

The Centrals are now 0-2 with a tough matchup against Woodville in a few weeks’ time. Sturt go two from two and will be preparing to take on the Bearcats at Port Adelaide on April 2.
