Sturt Women hold on to clinch round one win
A nail-biting match saw Sturt edge past Southern on the opening night of the 2017 Premier League season, running away victors 61 to 59.
The clubs traded buckets for the majority of the match before the home side were able to muster a nine-point lead early in the second half.
Tracy York’s team was able to narrow the margin through the contribution of Molly McKendrick and Tara Dodson, tying the game with just minutes left on the clock.
Foul trouble ultimately proved decisive for the away team as Sturt’s players were able to knock down their shots at the charity strike when it counted.
Amy Shaw and Hannah Richards were a tall order for the Southern defence as the Sturt duo peppered the basket with numerous post moves underneath the basket.
Sarah Elsworthy was also crucial for the Sabres. Another season with the Adelaide Lightning showed certain dividends as the WNBL Rookie of The Year runner-up was able to guide her team offensively during the final stages of the match.
In a game that could have gone either way Sturt were able to limit the Tigers from a threatening come-back.
Southern will come up against South Adelaide at Morphetville next week while Sturt will meet Forestville away from home.
